Thumbs up Epic Engineering '09 WRX Spring Install

Yesterday I had the Prototype Epic Engineering springs installed on my '09 WRX. Install went pretty smooth. Just be careful with the upper nuts on the rear strut tops. Don't let them off the stud when taking them off. You might end up fishing for them under stuff or having to take the car apart to find them. Which is easy enough to do but just be careful and go slow.

The immediate drop on the car was just about an inch. Makes the stance look so much nicer. Losing the big wheel gap in the front was the main thing that I wanted to get rid of. And these springs get rid of that without a problem. The rear end drops nicely as well. You end up with a little rake to the front but that just gives the car a little more aggressive look to it. Which I like. Overall the car just looks so much better than it did with the stock spring on it.

THE RIDE- I know that is what you are all going to be wondering about. I can say that after installing these, the ride quality is really no different than the stock springs. I can't tell a difference in rolling over bumps in the road. As my Daily Driver, I drive 30 miles each way to work on not the best of roads and these springs will soak up all the bumps. But when you want to push the car in the corners it really feels so much more planted to the ground. With less body roll and a lot more confidence in the turn in. Had the wife and a friend in the car after install and neither of them could tell a difference in the ride of the car. So you will be happy to know that it passes the wife/girlfriend test.

OVERALL- The ride is so much better than stock. I can say that after one day, with about 50 miles on the springs, I am very happy with them so far. I have no doubt that once these go into full production those of you that get them will be very happy as well. I will keep updating this as I get more time on the springs. Did have before and after pics taken and they will be up shortly I'm sure. (Armin ) And I'll keep updating with more pics in the weeks to follow.

Thanks to Dan at Epic and Armin for getting this all set up. Both of them are very stand up guys and you will be happy doing business with either of them in the future, if you haven't already. Thanks for reading and keep watching for updates.

Kevin

Thanks so much for helping us out on our R&D process, Kevin. This part of the R&D process is essential for us to ensure that we're putting out the best possible product. Here is a before photo and a photo immediately after the install was completed to show the initial difference:

As with all springs, they will settle a little bit, so I'll be meeting up with Kevin after a couple weeks to take more photos to show how much the springs settle. Thus far, we're very happy with the initial testing and Kevin's real-world testing is going to play an important role over the next few weeks. If all goes well, we'll have the springs going into production immediately

What are the spring rates for these? Are they made to be run with stock dampers?

As with all of our springs, these springs are designed specifically to work with the stock struts. Thus, our target market is the daily driver who wants a ride that's as comfortable as stock, but wants better performance when taking turns. Our progressive springs coupled with new bump stops means that there really is no single spring rate, and giving the spring rate range still doesn't truly reveal how these springs feel and perform, since the switchover points and replacement bump stops are not taken into account. It is our philosophy that simple numbers cannot tell the whole story of our products, much like how the amount of megapixels a digital camera has doesn't reflect how well a camera performs.

Thus, we do not publish any of the spring rates for our springs. If you absolutely, positively must know spring rates in order to properly match them to a set of struts that you might be running, then honestly our springs probably aren't going to be for you. On the other hand, if you're looking for a great set of springs for your daily driver with some occasional fun in the twisties or even some light track or auto-x use, then we honestly believe these are the best springs for you.

This is probably one of the best responses I've read regading your spring rates.

So this is only for the 09+ users?
People with 08 would have to upgrade to 09 struts for it to work?

Currently our testing is with an 09 customer, but honestly from a business point of view, it's a bit hard to justify spending the same amount of R&D time, not to mention the manufacturing costs for a single model year of one car. It's really unfortunate how much Subaru threw the 08 WRX owners under the bus, especially when it comes to the aftermarket. At this point, we're going to recommend upgrading to the 09+ WRX struts, since just about every handling and ride characteristic will be improved over the 08 WRX OEM setup.

these springs are based on the OEM struts so shouldn't have to worry about the OEM struts blowing out down the road.

glad that you like them. i know that they feel great on the car. just like driving on the stock ones just a little lower.

^^^again....Armin.

just got these on the car on satuday. have about 250 miles on them and they still feel great. 60 mile round trip to work and back puts on the miles fast. you will notice a little different change going over speed bumps but i guess that would be expected. have taken a few corners with these and the car really feels planted to the ground. able to take corners a bit faster than i could with the stock suspension on. just waiting for the first weekend in April when i can hopefully get the car on the track here. just might have to find an auto-x to do before then.
