Default Gear or bearing whine after clutch install

I recently had my clutch replaced on my 05 wrx with 70K. Not bad for a stock clutch since iv been running stage 2 since 20K. After i had a new OEM clutch installed iv noticed a little whine. it doesn’t go away when the clutch is engaged as far as i can tell so im looking for everyone’s opinion on what the noise could be. at first i thought maybe the pilot bearing could be whining if the tranny didn’t go in exactly straight. but i figured that would be a little more noticeable... any ideas please only useful remarks
thank you

Are you sure the shop that did it, replaced the pilot and throwout bearings? Was it the dealer, or did you buy a clutch kit?

it was a clutch kit and im sure everything was installed. im just not sure if the piolt was installed corectly or if somthing may have moved while reinstalling the transmission. im moving to a evo III 16G very shortly and i wanna make sure the tranny is ok before i go and drop everything on the motor.

You could take it back to the shop that installed it, and have them take a look at it. How loud is the noise?

When exactly do you hear the sound. I have delt with several of these sounds. Some are really bad when others are just a minor bad bearing.

i took it back to the stop they insist they dont hear anything...(a## holes). the sound seems to be at all times, which concerns me most but also makes me think it could be the piolet bearing. the sound isent mind numbing but definatly there. could a bearing been damaged durring install?

Yeah, a bearing could have definately been damaged during install. If they did not have the input shaft lined up properly during install and then used airtools to draw the trans to the motor, they can force the input shaft back into the trans and damage some of the internals. Just a thought.

Did you change fluids after the clutch? I've noticed the gear whine noise can be amplified with different fluids.

Also, it would not be a bad pilot bearing if the car is in gear with the clutch engaged. When the clutch is engaged, the input shaft that ride in the pilot bearing is spinning at the same rate as the fylwheel which contains the pilot bearing. If there is not difference in rotational velocity between the input shaft and the FW, then there is not movement in the bearing and therefore no noise.

could be a pinion bearing.... mine just went after 62K and about 10K being on a TD05H-18G (I would recommend the 18G if you are going to the EVO III.... EVO III = 595cfm; 18G = 600cfm.... not a huge difference.) Mine started making a loud whining sound as you accelerate and decelerate.... thought nothing of it. Drove it for a few weeks and then *pop*pop* blew the bearing apart. Get it checked for sure. I dont think they could have screwed up a clutch install that badly. we share a RWD platform... virtually the same as a Mustang. Sounds like a pinion bearing.

After more diagnosis i found that when the vehicle is running in neutral and in the air (on stands) the wheels are moving slightly.... so has this become now a transmission issue instead of clutch?

If the trans was forced in it could damage the input bearing. Often times it will have a spun sound when the clutch pedal is pressed in.

The tob often makes a funny sound in neutral

The pilot bearing seems to make a funny sound when in the middle of clutching. Generally when under a load.

Hope that helps.

If it's in the trans then you need to stop driving it and have it fixed. There is no way to know what's going on in there. The only way to know is to open it.
