Default GMC spreads Denali lineup to Sierra HD

Conventional wisdom has it that big trucks are an endangered species. If so, donít tell it to Detroit makers, whoíre unleashing an assortment of macho machines designed for those with serious towing and hauling needs.

Coming a month after the Chicago Auto Show debut of the new heavy-duty Chevy Silverado, General Motorsí other truck brand weighs in at the St. Louis Auto Show with the 2011 GMC Sierra Denali HD. Itís the first time the Denali name has been bolted onto a heavy-duty GMC pickup.

Along with the 2011 GMC Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD trucks, the Sierra Denali HD weighs in with an all-new frame and upgraded suspenion package.

With an all-new frame and beefed-up suspension, GMC claims the entire HD line-up delivers increased towing and payload capabilities.

But what should win it attention is the upgraded Duramax 6.6-liter turbodiesel, rated at 397 horsepower and an eye-popping 765 pound-feet of torque. Specific details havenít been released yet but GMC claims all HD models have increased towing and payload capacity for the í11 model-year.

The competition in the heavy-duty segment gets even tougher, going forward, what with Ford F-Series Super Duty, which features its own 6.7-liter turbo-diesel. For a review of the new Ford bruiser
For the first time ever, GMC will offer a luxury-laden Denali variant of its hauler-friendly Sierra HD pickup range. The truck unit of General Motors will now offer a Denali version on all but one of its mainstream consumer offerings.

Set to go on sale in early summer, the Sierra Denali Heavy Duty will come standard with the automakerís 6.0-liter Vortec gasoline V8 engine but will offer the new 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel that debuted recently in the Silverado HD.

That diesel V8 cranks out a solid 397 horsepower and 765 lb-ft. of torque at just 1,600 rpm and comes mated to a new six-speed Allison automatic transmission. Capable of running on B20 biodiesel, the big V8 can propel the Sierra Denali HD to 60 mph in less than 9 seconds and can tow a maximum of 15,600 lbs. with a fifth-wheel hitch.

To set the Denali apart from the standard Sierra Heavy Duty, the truck gets a unique four-bar chrome grille, chrome exterior door handles and accents and a choice of 18 or 20-inch chrome alloy wheels. Three colors will be on offer: Black, Stealth Gray and White.

Inside, the Sierra Denali HD gets the standard Denali tricks Ė look for unique brushed aluminum trim, upgraded leather seats and a whole host of standard equipment.
The Sierra Denali HD debuts today at the Work Truck Show in St. Louis
