Default A/C compressor fails to kick in with HOT weather

2000 Impreza L wagon 2.2L

A/C blows chiller air like a champ when the weather is below about 90 degrees F. Compressor engages/disengages normally while driving.

However, when the weather gets much warmer (HOT, when you REALLY need the A/C), the A/C will come on initially and cool for a few minutes, then the compressor will simply never re-engage again. (I verified this...opened the hood while blowing hot air with A/C switch on; compressor is not turning.)

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Perhaps you are at a loss of freon. There might be enough to have it work in the cooler conditions, but as it heats up there might not be enough charge to engage the clutch. If the A/C works at all other times I do not think the A/C itself might be broken, I would just check the charge, go to the local parts store and get a charging can WITH a gauge so you can see how much freon you actually have, and fill it accordingly.
