Default Protuner question

My local dyno shop is a protuner but they lost their tuner that went through the protuner certification. They have a new tuner but he has only tuned a few subarus and none with cobb protuner software but the shop still insists that they are protuner certified. It seems like the certification would leave when the certified tuner leaves and the shop would have to send the new tuner to take classes on how to use the protuner software. I know nothing about the certification process I just don't want to get protuned and pay extra for the "protune" if im not really getting a protune.

I do not know about the certification process either but you def dont sound confortable taking your car to get tuned there.. so imho i would not take it there.. I would like to know how pro tuners are granted the privilege.

Your not required to take any tuning classes with cobb. Most do because they want to learn more from the guys at cobb who design the software ect. But to add to that most of the people that get the cobb protuning software have been tuning for quite sometime before, on many vehicles and tuning solutions. If it is someone who hasnt tuned subarus in general then yeah that could be a problem in tuning your subaru. But experienced tuners can usually grab any tuning solution and tune the vehicle. We are just usually more specific to a certain vehicle make.

To add to that as an example I tune subies, I also tune just about everything else I can get my hands on software for and anything with a carb. I am one of 2 tuners at our shop, but everyone at the shop can tune. They all tune their own vehicles and have extensive training in tuning to be able to answer any questions asked by a customer, datalog fix driveability issues, and load the cars on the dyno and start tuning. Not all shops are cross trained at the same level.

I'll let Cobb chime in on how they choose who can purchase the software, but I know that a dyno facility or direct access to one is a requirement as is the area in which the tuner would be example population percapita in the area when near another cobb protuner ect.

This guy has been tuning gm cars since the late 80's but seemed kinda lost when I tried to explain my gmbcs system and how it works.

Ask to sit in on a tuning session. if you like what you see, or if watching him tune give you a little more knowledge (to ask the right questions) then you've got a winner. If you aren't an informed consumer, then it's going to be difficult to ascertain the worth of the person you're interviewing for this job, know what i mean?

If they flat out refuse, maybe that's not the shop for you. I'm all about transparency.

I still have a few weeks to make a decision. My car is apart at this same shop. I'm hoping he get a few Subaru tunes in and gets some training from Cobb.
