Zero sum exhaust set up?
All told, I'm actually quite pleased with my car's performance, for what it is. I'm not going to be winning any races, but then again, I'm not going to be entering any races either.
I think my car strikes a pretty good balance between gas efficiency and performance. Could be better, mpg wise, but for awd I was willing to move a little south of where I was with my Accent. That said, what would I do to an exhaust to get modest/moderate improvement in the sound department, without changing anything else? From what I've read, it seems a common thing is to get new headers, but this may decrease hp. I'm interested in a new sound, but I'm too practical (i.e., boring/cheap) to pay for something that's effectively a performance downgrade. It seems that there are certain combinations of exhaust parts that may actually increase hp. I'd be fine with that if it didn't affect mpgs negatively... which it seems like it would. Also, and I'm not that tied to this idea, but I'd like to keep the catalytic converter(s) on the thing. Seems they're there for an environmental reason, which I'm for as long as it actually is beneficial. I'm open to contrary arguments against. My guess is that I'd need some combination of new exaust components and/or headers + tune. How to figure out that combo, I can't even guess. I'll eventually talk to a tuner, but I wanted to probe the forum to see if anybody else has had similar goals, and if they were successful. I think it says this in my profile, but I have the 2011 OBS impreza.

Well, you could go with slightly larger equal length headers and a less restrictive muffler. Don't worry about the cats, they don't pose a restriction unless you mod quite a bit.
Don't forget about losing weight - that will also help with mileage. Rotating parts have a pretty big payoff. Things like a lightweight flywheel, crank pulley, and lighter wheels will certainly help out. You're not going to magically turn this thing into a prius with those, but every bit does help. As for your exhaust, read, read, read. We can't tell you what an "improvement" in the sound dept is, that's your call. |

I struggled with most of this post for a while, especially this part you identified here. I lack the vocabulary to describe the sound i'm looking for. I guess, "More better," doesn't really cut it, eh? um... How about this: I want it slightly louder, more distinct/succinct in individual "sound bursts". In otherwords, I want it to sound a little more drawn out to the point you could seem to almost hear individual rotations of the crank while it's idling. Meaner, in my estimation, but not overdone. |
