Question What do you know about synthetic oil?

Excuse me for being green behind the ears on the "facts" of automobile science. I just drive the things. Anyway, to my question....
Why does one pay $5 dollars for a liter of synthetic oil vs. $1 for the crude stuff? It must be doing something good. And why use it in your Subaru? I'd be curious to hear what you all know about it.

Thumbs up

synthetic oil is better for the engine for several reasons. break down is les significant than fossil, longevity (6k-10k vs 3k-6k), protection is better, i.e. they bond with engine better, lubricate better, promote better gas mileage. i used full syn in my Nissan and it ran smooth as hell with 100k+, it purred. i hgihly recommend it!

I run Castrol Syntec in mine and follow the manual on change time and Oil weight. Actually I change every 6000 miles which is a little sooner than the manual says. Be careful of what people tell you about oil weight I think a lot of folks on this board run too light of an oil.

BTW do a search in Powertrain and the old Technical furum and you will find a ridiculous amount of info on this topic.

I've written a couple articles on synthetic oils. Hopefully they'll answer your questions.
