Default 2004 2.5 question

I am looking at buying a 2004 forester from a guy at work. It is a 2004 2.5 5 speed. Does anyone know if they got the head gasket issue under control by then? Just turned 90,000 miles. Any other suggestions besides timing belt?

I think the head gasket problem was up to about 99-00. I have a 04 2.5rs and have had no issues but i have low miles for a 04, only 60k so far. I race it and it has cams and about everything you can do to a rs without going FI and I've had no issues at all. The EJ25's can last for ever as long as the kept oil in them.

Yes they still have occasional HG issues. Mine just blew up @ 100k miles.

If you do the timing belt, change all the pulleys and the tensioner. If they seize, you're toasted

I think they almost all have the potential to leak. my 2005 went at 65k miles.

although I haven't read about too many 2006+ head gasket leaks...

The SOHC tends to develop HG external leaks, which are usually minor. Visually inspect them from underneath. It's not common for them to have internal leaks. If he's been diligent abut maintenance, it's probably safe to buy. YMMV etc.
