Default What mods would you avoid now after doing them?

What mods have you done or the previous owner do that you wish you or they have never done and why?

Oh, almost forgot my PO lowered the car. It is about 2" off the ground making it almost impossible to drive in the snow. I plan on lifting it up at least 5", hopefully this summer.

Yea I don't know why you would lower a Subaru unless you live somewhere it doesn't snow but then why would you get AWD somewhere it doesn't snow.

I only did rear mud flaps and debadge. And it was tinted from the PO. Wouldn't change a thing.

Wheel spacers - never felt safe

Plastidip - gets in every single crack and crevice, can't remove 100% of it

Headlight mods - condensation nightmare

Cutting of anything - irreversible

And on that note, I tend to avoid anything that is not easily reversed.

Everyone with a Subie should avoid moving their license plates to the side and putting those tow hooks hanging from their bumpers. Also the whole "stance" craze.

Why? All of these "mods" look ricer and stupid.

Who hurt you?

You donít spare any opportunity to take a stab at things you donít like. No one really asked.

This thread is about things youíve personally done or someone else has done to your own car that you would not repeat.

I live in Southern California and it doesn't snow here it barely ever rains, the AWD is never completely utilized in this climate I agree, but then again, driving with AWD around corners is fun.

In retrospect I probably would have been better off with a fwd car. But the utility, space and price of the Impreza sport make it a great functional car with at hatch. There are so few wagons or spacious hatchback on the US market, it's sad.

If I were to do it again, I still don't know what car I would have got in 2015. A Mazda 3 maybe, but the boot was tiny in comparison. Maybe a Volkswagen golf wagon. Idk.

I installed a hidden trailer hitch from torqlift. The thing weights like 40+ lbs. To this day I have not used it being as I never bought the bike rack I wanted (One Up USA). Then I had a kid, so there is no time to Ride. It was a bitch to install, and it also blocks you from putting in 80% of any aftermarket axle back exhaust. I could always remove it, but then what would I do with it?

On a similar vein, what mods would people whole heartedly do without question if they, god forbid, bought another impreza?

My list based on what I've done...

Performance: 20mm sway bar
Safety: H11 low beam bulb swap
Aesthetics: Sport mesh grille, All-Fit full lip kit, Tint
Convenience: Trunk liner, Side cargo nets, Rear trunk LED bulb

Not so important: STI flexible strut tower bar, Aero roof rails, Back seat covers, Rear bumper guard, LED fogs, LED side markers, licence plate lights , 2" trailer hitch

Tint, but honestly probably won't buy another imprezA, this car is great but I would much rather drive a lancer or older BMW.

My Impreza will be my winter beater for the next 20 years though.

would never do again: Lowering springs- tore the hell out of tires no matter how many camber adjustments, and was only like 3/4" drop.

would do again : window tinting; adding sway bar

I bought a short throw shift kit for my car. Didn't care for it at first, but left it installed for a week, thinking it would grow on me. It didn't grow on me. I took it off and sold it to someone else on here.

What did you find to be the "driving" difference with the sway bar? Also, what low beam swap did you do?

The stock rear sway bar is 16mm and the upgrade is 20mm in thickness (you can also find a 19mm). If your car is base model, there is no sway bar stock.

So by simply adding a rear sway bar to a car with no sway bar, it will significantly reduces the amount of body roll in corners. By adding a thicker one, its effects are felt to a greater degree, less outward lean in corners.

A thicker rear sway bar also allow the car to rotate quicker in heavy cornering. When a car is unbalanced in corners, it will either understeer (feels like pushing through the corner, thought to be safer for everyday drivers) or oversteer (rear end slides out, like a RWD car in snow). The thicker rear sway bar for this car will make the car closer to neutral. You can go overboard with a 22-25mm rear sway bar because the stock front is I believe 22mm.

In short, it makes the car turn better.

As for the low beam swap, I only changed the bulbs from the stock 35w halogen with a H11 plug, to a 55w halogen bulb with a H9 plug. The plugs are almost identical except for a little sliver of plastic which is easily removed with a Dremel or a sharp blade. This mod is safe, throws no codes and is reliable. I've been driving my h9 bulbs for over a year with no issues. The key is to keep your greasy fingers off the bulbs when you are swapping them. It is a very noticable difference in light output. From yellow lights to kind of white

That is all.

installing wheel spacers was a mistake, made the car handle like garbage. Also any type of lowering spring, makes the car stiffer but isn't the best with a city filled with potholes
