Default BMW Says It Will Debut ActiveE 1-Series EV in Next Month

BMW will debut its ActiveE 1-series electric vehicle at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show next month, as the German automaker moves forward with the second phase of a small-car electrification process that started with its Mini E (pictured) two years ago.

The ActiveE will have a single-charge range of about 100 miles while its electric motor will provide 170 horsepower and as much as 184 foot-pounds of torque, giving the car a 0-60 miles per hour acceleration time of less than nine seconds, BMW said. The car will have a new advanced lithium-ion battery pack BMW developed with SB LiMotive.

Starting this year, BMW, which has field tested more than 600 Mini E's since 2009, will test more than 1,000 ActiveE's in the U.S. Europe and China in an effort to get more data for the third stage of the electrification process, which will culminate with the Megacity vehicle. That car will launch under a yet-to-be-determined BMW sub brand in 2013.
