Default 235/40/18 vs 265/35/18 on 18x9 wheel

I'm looking to pick up 18x9 drag dr-31's for my 2011 wrx in the future. I am currently running stock suspension, but will be lower in the future. The reason I picked these two tires is so my speedo isn't off too much. These two are only .3% and .1% off respectively. I know 235 is considered a strech for a 9" wide wheel, but I feel like 265 is just too beefy and too much tire for me at the moment, I'm only stage 2 and the car is a daily, so it's not like I *need* all that tire for grip, I'm also afraid that I will have to deal with fender mods etc. even before I'm lowered (which will only create more problems) But I'm also scared that 235 is too much strech/ too little tire in terms of grip. I want the car to handle and look good without sacrificing the speedometer reading. Right now sways are going on soon and in the future, a drop by means of, so where should I go in terms of tire size? My ultimate goal is to make the car just an awesome DD, no tracking what-so-ever.

depending on the tire, a 235 has minimal to 0 stretch on a 9" wheel.

Again, what FITS will depend on the wheels OFFSET!

Wheel offset is +38. So I think a 265 would either need a slight roll or just barely make it. But in terms of 235 (which is probably the size I'm going to pick) what brand should I look for? I hear good things about star specs.

a 235 might require a slight roll in the rear, and moderate to aggressive camber settings. Federals and star spec's run about 1 size large, so keep that in mind when ordering.

a 265 will require a slight pull.

Really? I guess I don't know much about wheel fitment after all. I though the widebodies can fit like 9.5's and bigger tires? Why would a smaller width and smaller tire need more work? Not trying to be sarcastic by the way, I legitametly am trying to learn.

a pull means MORE work. less tire = less work. While the GR's have more room to work with, you still can't go with a sub 40 offset and a 245+ tire without fender work.

Yeah, I new pull>roll in terms of work, but I was hoping 18x9 +38 w/ 235's meant no work x_x
I saw someone running a +37 18x9.5 w/ 265's slammed on coilovers and he said there was no fender work done.
I don't mind doing a slight roll, but was really hoping to avoid camber work.

yea...that guy was lying about his fender work, or lied about his fitment. MachV Motorsports runs a 18x9.5 +40 with 265s, and they needed to roll....

Like I said though, the 235 *might* require a roll in the rear, but its possible you wont need to do anything.

IMO.....again IMO, if you have a 11' wrx/sti unless your running a low offset and or 18x10 wheels you shouldn't run a 235 tire. Not because performance, handling, blah blah blah But sunken wheels+semi stretched tires just doesn't look right

235 isn't even stretched at all on a 9. Get a 245/40 otherwise.

235 does have a little stretch to it on a 9"....unless its federals or another similar tire i suppose. I'd say 255/35 if it were my car......again its just my opinion.

Sorry to butt in, but on a 06 legacy, I'm putting 18x9.5s on the it and what size should I go, it's not lowered. I was thinking 235/40 but dont want them super stretched. Any insight?

Yep. In all reality, OP could use any tire shorter than the 265/35. 255/35 wouldn't be an issue, and would still look killer.

you don't have to be "hellaflush" to make your car look good.

Yup, but the 08+ wrx's have larger wheel wells and generally use a taller tire profile so a 235/40 or 265/35 are you best choices. But 245/40 is not bad either since that's the oem size on the 08+ sti. OP can probably even pick up a cheap used set.

Really? Do some research first. If you actually read the previous 3 or so posts you would already know that 235/40 is not stretched at all. I run that size on my 9.5. hardly any stretch. And if you're not lowered or have extra camber adjustment then you're not gonna fit them. Legacy fenders aren't wide enough and you'll probably rub struts to. GL.

depends on the tire. jdmboy has 235 ad07s on his 18x9 g-forces and the sidewalls are not square like the 235 s.drives/federals on sc00by's 17x9s. i don't understand why because ad07s run wide.

got pics of your hardly-any-stretch 235s on 18x9.5s?

Check my posting in the gallery.

I really don't think it's bad at all...and I hate super stretch.

my feds are 245's (more like 255's). The 235/40 s.drives were great, very subtle stretch. a 235 fed would probably have very minimal stretch on a 9.5 since they sit so square on a 9" wheel (all the pics I posted of 235/40 federals were from Grippy Monkeys car).

O reary? I have 235/40/18s on a 18x8.5 wheel and there's a little stretch. I can imagine a 235/40/18 on a wheel .5" larger would add a bit more stretch.

255/35/18 IMO, if any tire size.

it depends on the tire. some tires (like yours) obviously aren't a 235mm tire as advertised, but probably closer to 225. Where other tires (like federals or star specs) run much wider than advertised, closer to 245.

That's why I ask... Obviously everyone has a different opinion about stretch and 18x9.5 I think would have more stretch with 235s as opposed to a 9. I know a lot of guys run that size, but if someone has a pic of those sizes post them up. I'm looking for the sidewall to be fairly flush with the rim.

fairly flush? you'll want a 255/35/18. good luck fitting that under your fenders without rubbing
