Default McLaren F1 vs MP4-12C video feature

McLaren F1 vs MP4-12C video feature

Just how does the new McLaren MP4-12C compare with the older, more focused F1 racer? In a rare opportunity to find out, Steve Sutcliffe takes them both on track to see where the similarities start and the differences end.

I got excited at first and thought it was an F1 LM. Still, cool to watch.

Even though the rumor had been confirmed as false ahead of time, I was still kind of bummed that there was no F1 at the Cars and Coffee in Irvine last weekend, though it was cool to see the MP4-12C and the bare chassis.

Sweet video. I'm impressed by the MP4-12C from that... even though I've found very little inspiring about it before now.

I wouldn't go comparing those McLaren's directly to one another, other than the fact that they both make me happy in the pants. Some great engineering going on with that company, can't wait to see what they come up with to replace the F1.

^ Same here. I was surprised when it was released a while ago that the twin-turbo V-8 was developed in-house, though I don't know if they have the resources to make a V-12 to the specifications that they're shooting for, assuming they are planning on going that route again... so perhaps they'll be involving Mercedes/AMG for that? The preliminary sketches looked pretty awesome and definitely showed its roots to the F1 road car while looking modern.

The F1 used a very specialized BMW built 6.1 liter V12.

The 12C is using their own in-house twin-turbo 3.8 liter V8.

AMG/McLaren parted ways after the SLR project concluded. 12C is McLaren's new direction, and SLS AMG is theirs. I am not sure how keen they are on cooperating after the SLR's somewhat tepid reception.

McLaren F1 will probably always be at the top of my list, until something else comes out as a complete and utter game changer that tears up the old rule book and writes it's own.

But I have been really impressed by the 12C in it's Ferrari/Lamborghini competitive market segment target. It is not a million dollar baby, like the F1 was, and thus not truly it's successor. More like it's new little sister.

It is kind of amazing to see just how compact the F1 really is. Without context of another car next to it, it doesn't look as absolutely small as it really is. It is 911 size or smaller. The 12C is a bigger car, and it isn't all that big in itself.

The F1 will always be the ultimate exotic. I don't think there will ever be a replacement. People have tried throughout the decade, they maybe faster or handle better, but none have the soul of the Mclaren.

IT is simply impossible to make anything better than the original McLaren F1 period! with that being said, why in this world would they have not kept the original center driver arrangement???! its an iconic feature of the car NEVER used in any other car.
the new design just looks boring, like every other supercar out there.
the McL F1 is an impossible act to follow. PERIOD.

BTW, the 1965 Ferrari 365P Berlinetta Speciale had three seats, with the driver in the middle.

The seating position was reported to be great for driving, but a big obstacle for getting in and out of the car over the high carbon fiber sills/consoles on either side of the driver's seat, or closing the doors without passengers to do it for you.

I've watched people get in/out of F1's and it really is a PITA. Plus the room left over for each passenger is far from generous. It's a cool idea, bad in practice.
