so, my 03 forester 2.5x dropped a few teeth on the front ring gear... from what i have read, any phase II ver. I trans should swap right in, as long as its the same 4.44 ring gear... from my research, that would be just about any 99-03ish (blurred line on when pII VII was implemented across the lines) foz or outback trans?

more specifically, wondering if an 01 foz 4eat will plug and play in an 03 foz, axle shafts, all that jazz.... i know its a 4.44 gear...

any input would be appreciated, as well as tips for pulling the trans, with out a lift, and if possible without pulling the engine as well...

thanks!!!

I can answer pat of this.

For any Subaru trans I've pulled, goes sorta like this.

Jack each end up as high as you can (2.5 ton big jack at full lift), lifted by front pad behind engine and later the rear diff.
Place jack stands under car at full lift.
Drain trans, hopefully lube is warm if it's a MT.
Drop full exhaust, main mid car heat shield, driveshaft.
Drop trans support.
Disconnect trans electrical and shift linkage (clutch as well if MT, trans cooler lines if AT).
Put jack under trans
Remove trans/engine bolts and nuts and starter (may want to disconnect battery, I wrap the starter in a large rag to prevent shorts).
Disconnect pitch stop
Pull front axles off trans, you may need to move trans side to side to disengage axles from trans.
Pull trans out and lower with jack.

YMMV

well, after some in depth searching and cross referencing at opposed forces, looks like the CV axle break was 02-03 years... pre 03 are female axles, 03+ are males... so... if i get this 01, i will need some new cvs.... not a big deal.... wheel hub sides seem the same at 27 splines each...

NP. Obviously some things can be done in a different order, some are sorta specific. It will be obvious as you get into it, but I threw together a quick list as a help.

Have fun.
