JC/AQ win big at inaugural GTA Time Attack @ WSIR 5-21-2011
JC Meynet/AQ Motorsports/OMG Racing Subaru STI wins the Modified/Limited GT class and resets Modified/Limited overall track records as well as the Mod/Ltd AWD division track records at Willow Springs Raceway at the inaugural Global Time Attack May 21-22 2011.
Global Time Attack (GTA) is the newest Time Attack "love child" organization conceived and created by the original US Time Attack front man/"baby daddy", John Naderi. "Nads", as he is affectionately known, is the hardest working and most selfless promoter in motorsports who is thankfully filling the need for Time Attack racers across the US. Along with the Modified Magazine Tuner Shootout at Firebird and the Superlap Battle Race at Buttonwillow, GTA has proven itself to be a worthy part of this "hat trick" threesome of Time Attack excellence. Want proof? Simply read on and look at the results from GTA's inaugural race at Willow Springs International Raceway (WSIR) and the 4 division and 1 Class record that got smashed by the top shelf attendees.
Preparing for our weekend with GTA at WSIR was a relatively easy affair for JC and the AQ Motorsports/OMG Racing team. After having just come off spectacular results at the Modified Magazine's Tuner Shootout in April (details are hush hush for now until the Aug issue of Modified hits the news stands in July) and our record setting class and division championship from Superlap Battle this past winter, we knew our car and team are at the top of their game and ready to face the best of the rest. With just a basic change of fluids, tires and a track specific alignment, we headed out to WSIR Saturday morning ready for battle. Our skeleton crew for this event would simply consist of JC and one team member each day (Shawn Church from Church Tuning/Automotive on Saturday and Peter "Jamal" LeClaire from AQ Motorsports on Sunday). Racing is so much more enjoyable when well prepared.
With our car well prepared in advance by our great crew, all that was needed was a simple tire pressure check and then hit the track. Although JC has logged literally thousands of miles at WSIR on motorcycles as well as many in cars, this would be only his second time at WSIR in a year and a half and his first time back after a horrific 120mph+ crash in the infamous high speed turn #9 (the result of a broken steering upright) nine months earlier. With only a half dozen hot laps in the past year and a half, JC had to exorcize any lingering demons from that crash and get right down to the task of hauling ass starting with the very first hot lap. No time to acclimate or get into a rhythm: this is Time Attack, come prepared to set records or go home empty handed.
As always, we came out swinging for the fences! We knew that conditions would be best early in the day and our car has proven itself to be in top form right from the start at it's recent races. With this in mind, our strategy would be to hit the track with everything we got right out of the gate! With this non-typical in motorsport racing strategy in place, our first hot lap was a solid 1:24.1 which alone would have won our class/division and been the fastest lap of the day overall including all of the Unlimited class cars as well as all the 100+ NASA race cars in attendance. Success achieved and not a bad start as this was our first lap back at this track after our big crash and a bunch of car changes since last time here. However, "not bad" is not good enough for us as this is Time Attack and we were going for new track records: the holy grail and raison d'etre for Time Attack!
After just two hot laps (our second also being good enough for the win as well but a bit slower than our first), we pulled into the hot pits to let the car and it's various components cool off. With just seven minutes left in our 20 minute timed session we spotted a reasonable gap in traffic and went out for a final lap of the session. Unfortunately, a small connector to the dash came unplugged so JC had to drive this lap without the benefit of any gauges and worse, no RPM tachometer to know exactly when to shift. Oh well, we could still use this lap to acquire valuable data so we went for it anyway.
Maybe we stumbled upon a speed secret or got a strange glimpse into JC's psyche but that "blind" lap ended up being a full second faster than before with a 1:23.1 lap time! This single lap would be good enough to completely secure our class and division win including a new track record in each as well as the fastest time of the day overall for all cars in all classes, not just our Mod/Ltd class. Not bad for just three laps of racing with no warm up or testing. Mission accomplished thanks to great preparation!

With that lap logged into the official record books, our plan was to chill out and see what the competition might bring and only go back out if we were challenged. At the end of the day, our time and records held up to formidable attacks from the other teams so it was time for some well earned rest and relaxation and prepare for Sunday's early session where we would try and improve on our time. After all, Time Attack is more than simply winning, it's about beating track records, even if it's our own we are trying to beat!
Sunday morning's first session would be slightly earlier than on Saturday and we felt that the cooler temperatures, less wind and rubbered-in track would give us the best chance to improve on our times. Unfortunately, we encountered a mechanical issue with an overstressed OEM component early in our promising first hot lap which would sideline us for the rest of the day. Mechanical issues are nothing new to anyone pushing the envelope and reaching for records. The very nature of Time Attack racing is like drag racing on a roadrace course where you put it all on the line in pursuit of track records. The old saying that second place is simply the first loser holds true in Time Attack racing and we try to leave that for the other guys...
Nothing to do now but go get a much needed pedicure in beautiful Lancaster, lunch at Foster's Freeze and see if any of the 18 GTA teams had improved their game for Sunday to give us a challenge. Our competition burned plenty of midnight oil, replaced some of their own broken parts and managed to get a little closer to us on Sunday but fortunately for us, our Saturday's time held strong and we were crowned the Modified/Limited GTA class and division champions with new track records in each category. Our class/division had the most entrants of any class/division in GTA, making our success so much sweeter and satisfying. Awesome event, awesome competition and awesome victory for our awesome team and awesome sponsors!
We cant say enough "thank you's" to all the people and sponsors that make our racing success possible as well as GTA for putting together such a fine event. The entirely volunteer crew of Adan Quezada, Peter "Jamal" LeClaire, Jason and Johnny from AQ Motorsports, Shawn Church from Church Automotive and Tuning, Frank Chen from JRZ North America, and Ryan Novak from Novak Mechanical, all of whom are second to none. Our fine list of sponsors, most of who have been with us for many seasons includes Toyo Tires, Enkei Wheels, Stoptech Brake calipers, lines and rotors, CL Brake Pads from Essex Distributing, Driveshaft shop axles and driveshaft, JRZ North America for shocks, Ray Cunningham from Kaminari carbon fiber and suspension components, ACT Clutches, Brian Crower engine components, Outfront Motorsports for our shortblock, Portflow for our excellent cylinder heads, Turbos by Garrett for our GTX35, AEM engine management, Fluidamper, HoseTechnique, Motul Oils, Moroso oil pans and accumulator, Deatschwerks Injectors, Kognition wings, Hellafunctional aero, AFI Turbo, B-Bar Beef, Turn-In Concepts, Whiteline, JHP USA, G-spot Racing and everyone else who puts in time and effort towards our success.
The awards ceremony was refreshingly unorthodox (as expected from Nads) yet paid due respect to the fine competitors who put so much time, money and effort into their racing endeavors. Not only was there champagne and Pabst Blue Ribbon spraying on the podium but steak knife sets and big checks were handed out for the first time in US time Attack history (yes, real money and real steak knifes!) As a testament to the caliber of participants at this inaugural GTA event, several other track records were broken as well. Berk/Bonanni set a new record in rear wheel drive Street, Rado/World Racing set a new record in front wheel drive Unlimited, Westphal/GST set a new record in all wheel drive Unlimited and we, JC/AQ Motorsports/OMG set new records in all wheel drive Mod/Ltd as well as also setting a new track record in the Mod/Ltd class overall. The overall Street and overall Unlimited class overall records were not beaten at this event. Congratulations also goes out to Rado and Westphal for beating our Saturday's fastest time of the day on Sunday by about 1 second and 3.5 seconds respectfully in their Unlimited class cars, testament to the continued hard work these and all dedicated teams put into their race programs. Everyone who set records received additional bonus checks as did a few additional wild card cash awards for closest battle etc and all awards were distributed on the podium, no waiting for "the check's in the mail" BS....
It is safe to say that GTA has successfully thrust themselves into the finicky world of Time Attack Racing and done so with quite a splash. A first class roster of racers/teams, sensible rules, a well organized schedule, real $$$ payouts and the "fun factor" that's so often missing is sure to be a success. No wonder GTA is part of the new "hat trick" in Time Attack in the US along with Modified Magazine's Tuner Shootout and the Superlap Battle. These are the places to be if you race Time Attack and you can expect to see JC/AQ motorsports/OMG at all three events while competing against the best teams in America.
Thank you, JC and crew
