Question what do you think???

Here's the dilemma; I am in the market for a new car soon, and I am lookin' at getting either
#1 - an L AWD sedan 93-99, and a wrecked WRX, swapping over all the suspension, drivetrain, engine, and try to sneak it past Smog Inspection. - PLUSES: US-WRX!!! drawbacks: jacked deal w/ smog, lossa work(especially wiring), long process.
OR...
#2 settle for a 2000-2001 2.5RS Sedan, and prolly pay more, but don't have to worry 'bout Smog.
OR...FORGET THIS OPTION! I know it's only a possibility.
#3 Wait another two years to get a MY04 STi WRX (by then the price will be more in range, but I am impatient).
I would like to see if any of you have done the swap successfully? Or if is not possible.

Please remember I live in California, but advantage is I live in Northern Cali!!!

I need input....MUCH TIA!!!!!!!

um...unless theres been an official statement released about the sti that i have no idea about, i doubt the sti will be coming to us so soon. the wrx is just starting to get popular and the evo 7 aint comin yet so i dont think theres really a good realistic reason for subaru to risk bringin the sti here so soon. n would you really want to ride your schwinn bike for another 2 years just to wait for the sti if it does make it to us shores with other available options open to u? i personally would just get a wrx and slowly fix it up. if thats out of your range now, then maybe u can get a 2000rs and turbo it. i'm not so sure that that conversion (#1) would be too worth it, especially if the sti does come in '04 when you could have afforded it. about the smog, why is it easier to pass smog up in northern cali? i mean, theres a hella lot of ppl that get by smog down here with um...not so legal mods due to the larger street-tuner-people population, so wouldnt it be easier to find a place to sneak it by down here since ppl already do it? i have no idea what i'm talkin about, nevermind me....

Wink

in Northern Cali, it's possible to convince the old guy at the smog station that a 95 Impreza came factory w/ a EJ20 turbo, & that "It was like this when I bought it." plus the smog shops up here are more likely to take your word, and open a Pabst Blue Ribbon, than spend the time to look up the engine codes or call to check into it.

OK...screw the MY03-04-05-whatever STi, I realize its not solid yet! I just want to know if any one has gotten away w/ a EJ20 swap...I really do NOT wan t to settle for a turbo'd 2.5 because I will eventually have to swap the drivetrain from a JDM WRX anyway, PLUS the 2.5 motors are weak when it comes to boosted power, (that's why the EJ20 has the brace to hold on the injectors). I have access to a EJ20 STi VerIII Motor & drivetrain, & aluminum suspension arms, out of a friend of mines wrecked rally car. I just need to know if it can be done, and smuggled through smog in CA.

Lightbulb

Actually Motor Trend quotes STI directly in this months issue stating that a 273HP WRX STI will hit the U.S. within a year due to the strong sales of the current WRX.

Angry

OK....I DIDN'T START THIS THREAD TO HAVE ANOTHER rumorville debate, screw the STi version, I am so irritated, I may just get a 99-01 Audi S4 and say "Screw Scubies". I love them, but man, WHO cares if an STi version comes to the states. I don't think I'd get one now, just so I don't have LAME HOLE *** ask me "Wow, is it FAST???" All I really want to know is if the JDM STi VerIII is possible in CA. I always wanted a sleeper car, & I think this would be an IDEAL candidate. Thanks

is a 250HP turbo EJ25 with way more torque then the EJ20 WEAK!?!?!? I think not; and I am sure there are others on this board that will agree . and for the record the tranny is the weak link .

I doubt you would be "settling", quite a few people I have talked to, bitch about the EJ20 not having any low end.

the US hybrid has been done a few times in CA. contact:
iSR , they have the most recent transplant that I know of.

smog in CA... good luck... unless you know someone .

one more thing...

if I were you I would turbo the EJ25. the transplant seems VERY involved and more possible problems.

just my .02

Thumbs down

G2 - No need to get pissy. Just relaying what I read. Your the one who stated that you were considering waiting to see if the STI did in fact come out.

If you want a real sleeper, put a Yamaha R1 motor on your '63 Schwinn Pedal Bike.

LOL.....I love gettin' a rise outta you guys ,
Opie- I am not pissed, I just should have formatted my first post as a "DREAM", and I already have a Yami FZR for my fun toy

Wop-the drivetrain is a big plus from my friend, & all the EJ25's I know who boost them have boost leak probs, & check engine mystery codes, but they may have just been drunk!...but that's why I asked, I think a EJ25T would rock, if it was reliable. And the tranny prob will be taken care of, cuz the one my friend has is a JDM one w/ different gears (close ratio), and a Cusco LSD Front/Center/Rear, Yes that is the Cool Center Tarmac 65/35 spit one, I just need a reliable motor platform, Your info helps out alot! BTW I really wanted a Forester, I have a connection w/ Prova Japan http://www.jprova.co.jp and they have lossa Forester stuff. just the little lady HATES the Forester body style (she thinks it looks like a Jeep Grand Cher. that got shrunk in the wash) Thanks Again!

if you want a sleeper... why not turbo a forester? that would be sweet .
