Default We Hear: Peugeot Prepping Successor to 205 GTI Hot Hatch

Peugeot is intending to make a true successor to one of the great legends of the European hot hatchback scene in the 1980s-90s, the light, fast, sweet-handling and pretty 205GTI. The companyís subsequent hot-hatches have all been flabbier. But the engineers and designers recognize it, and its new supermini, due out at the end of 2012, is, we hear, lighter and more compact than the car it replaces. The hottest version will use the co-developed engine thatís seen in the Mini Cooper S JCW, a 1.6-liter turbo at around 200HP.

Under a new design chief, Peugeotís style has been getting more elegant and less baroque of late, both in its concepts and production cars. Peugeotís race cars lost out by seconds to the lone surviving Audi at this yearís Le Mans, but they have actually beaten Audi 13 times out of 15 in the past two years Ė itís just that the two misses were the French companyís home race.

The company also competes in rallies. Peugeot is mad keen to be seen as a sporting brand again, and its RCZ compact coupe is a success. A proper new GTI should cement it.
