Question Where are they now?: GL coupe rally cars

O.K. you hardcore rally historians, i'm looking for info on the old Subaru GL rally coupes. I have an old magazine ad that features one, touting the GL coupes 1-2 finish in the Michigan "Press On Regardless" Rally. I don't know the year, but the base price for a GL featuring the new "quadrizontal" engine was $2196.

I did a quick WWW search & didn't find much, and there's no mention of them in Klein's 'Rally Cars' book.

Thanks. Any info will be appreciated Especially if anyone knows if and where these cars are now, or knows of anyone running similar GLs.

What year was this??? I can't think of a single Subaru with the GL designation that would be under $2200 NEW....

The first flat four Subaru was the FF1, a car a bit longer than a justy, maybe as wide, and a bit shorter.

Dean Fry from the Blue Mt. Region used to race a GL hatchback when he first started. It was slow...and rusty...sorta like most of those old GLs
Then it was the newer body style 88-ish coupe. He sold that to a guy who drove it like hell. He replaced it with the current Legacy seen at STPR and Maine events. It may be at Cherokee Trails, not sure.
Anyway, Dean's is the only GL I ever saw.

Subaru used to run a few old GL Hatchbacks back in the day at the Safari Rally. I'm not sure if they were even turbocharged

Personally, I think the RX sedans and three-door rally cars were awesome. The new SCC has a shot of one of DiMarco's old 3-doors I believe. Almost makes me want to go out and find another to mess around with( if the WRX was coming in a week or two )

And Tommy, I agree about Fry. Hat's off to the man for being with Subaru for as long as he has been. Not the most sociable guy in the world, but nice enough I guess.
