Default Keep it Clean: California Regulators Hot on GMís New E-ROD Crate Engine

Custom hot rod builders can celebrate a little more after a second addition joins GMís line of high-performance engines that meets Californiaís strict smog laws. Enthusiasts are sure to welcome the E-ROD 5.3-liter crate engine with open arms. We reported on the start of GMís E-ROD system during the 2009 SEMA show, where the automaker previewed an LS3 crate engine. But thatís not all. The entire E-ROD system includes a wiring harness, exhaust manifolds, catalytic converters, oxygen sensors, mass airflow sensor, air filter, and fuel tank evaporation canister. All components are certified smog legal in all 50 states, but only if installed as a complete package.
The California Air Resources Board has now approved another addition to the program: GMís E-ROD 5.3-liter crate engine package that can be legally installed in model year 1995-and-earlier cars. Both automatic and manual versions were given the green light, and the entire system includes all required emissions equipment.
Based on the 5.3-liter V-8 used in the Chevrolet Silverado and other GM trucks, the E-ROD 5.3-liter produces a healthy, and clean 326 hp and 350-lb-ft, so enthusiasts can proudly put the pedal to the metal without having to slip the smog guy a Benjamin or two when it comes time to register the car. Vehicles made before the 1975 model year are smog-exempt in California, but these new complete powertrains give California enthusiasts that own 1975-1995 model year vehicles more re-power options.

I hope it comes with an engine cover... because that is one ugly mill.
