Default Toyota Motorsport Aims for Nürburgring Record….with an EV!

Toyota Motorsport GmbH, done with F1, plans to set an electric vehicle record around the 12.9-mile Nürburgring Nordschleife on August 29.

It’s an intriguing challenge. The current EV record around the Nordschleife is 9 minutes 1.3838 seconds, and Toyota, based on tests, feels the car will be on the pace immediately.

About the 2-seater: It has two electric motors to deliver peak power of 280 kW and a top speed of 260 km/h (162 mph). TMG, of note, says the powertrain is ideal for any future single-make electric motorsport series. Not surprisingly, TMG hopes to begin commercial sales of its electric powertrain technology in 2012.

Total weight of the sports car is just 2140 lb., including the lithium-ceramic battery that allows for nimble handling around the Nordschleife.

TMG General Manager Electric & Electronics Ludwig Zeller said: “We want to demonstrate the high level of performance which can now be reached with an electric powertrain, not only in motorsport terms but as part of TMG’s existing development work on road car EV technology. There is no more evocative place to illustrate this performance than on the Nordschleife. Our target is to beat the existing record by more than just a few seconds because that will demonstrate just how far our technology has developed since TMG began working on KERS systems in 2007. Many people are still dreaming of an electric future for motorsport; at TMG we believe this is much closer than some think and we intend to show what can be achieved with a high-performance electric powertrain.”

A question: Will an EV ever be a serious contender for the overall win at Pikes Peak?
