performance chips????
So I just recently purchased a 2001 Impreza RS and want to make a few mods to it. Ordered a cold air intake and was also thinking about a performance chip but not sure what brand to get. I see them on line with a wide variety in price, brand, and performance. I would appreciate it if anyone had any suggestions to help me (brand and site to purchase from)
Thank you!

Welcome, and congrats on the purchase. Before you buy ANYTHING else for your car, consider the following, while having a good beer.
1) Maintenance. maintenance...and maintenance. That includes mandatory maintenance, and if there is cash left, preemptive maintenance. 2) Read: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=195694 3) Read: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=533787 4) Read: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1484920 In short, ebay chips are like pills that make you lose 49 pounds in weight while adding 4" to your appendage. Engine management being as complex as it is, there is NO way to add performance using a simple trick. Some of those chips (the sophisticated ones that actually have components), screw your intaker temperature reading so as to make your ECU think it's colder, and thus dumping more fuel in the car. Nothing good comes out of it though. Enjoy |

The truth is that NA engines are fairly well optimized from the factory. If it was as simple as a $50 chip, it would have left the factory with it.
To make power on an NA engine, you need to improve airflow. Doing the intake by itself won't help much, and might actually cost you power. Exhaust needs to be first, and then intake. |
