Default Ram to sell Fiat-based small commercial van in 2013

TURIN, Italy -- Chrysler Group's Ram brand will begin selling a small paneled van built by a Fiat joint venture in Turkey in 2013.
Chrysler first disclosed plans to market a small commercial van in North America in November 2009 as part of its fledgling alliance with Fiat.

Fiat Group Automobiles and its Turkish joint venture, Tofas Turk Otomobil Fabrikasi , said today that they had signed a memorandum of understanding to supply the Ram brand with 190,000 units of the Doblo over seven years.

In a joint release, Fiat and Tofas said the Turkish joint venture will invest over $160 million to refit the Doblo for the United States.
Ram brand sales have climbed 22 percent this year, to 163,401.
The Doblo was launched in Europe in early 2010.

In North America, the Ram small van will compete with the Ford Transit Connect, another vehicle built in Turkey.

U.S. sales of the Transit Connect have climbed 31 percent this year to 20,496 units.

Fiat also plans to bring a larger, Ram-branded commercial van to the United States based on the Ducato.

The Ducato-based van, which probably will be made in Mexico, will fill the gap left when Sprinter sales were discontinued in 2009. The Ducato-based van is likely to arrive in 2013.
