Default How to check if wheels are bent, out of round?

I have bought 2004 STi BBS wheels for my Forester XT off eBay and plan to have them refinished in black.

Prior to have them coated I would like to know how to check if they are bent or out of round, they seem to be ok but want to make sure before I spend the money.

I have access to a dial indicator but that's all, looking for advise, tips, techniques and best practices to check for wheel straightness/out of round.

For example, my colleague suggested mounting to rear hubs to take dial readings as the front hubs usually exhibit a higher degree of play due to steering forces.

Basically looking for videos or ideas to make sure these wheels have no issues, I hate buying things off eBay so doing this will give me piece of mind and prevent refinishing a bad wheel.

Thanks.

Put the Rim on a balancer with no tire and you have your answer, provided the tech doing so is not a complete idiot!!

Any brands of spin/electronic balancer I should look for?, I live in hill billy town in the middle of nowhere TN so they have 1940s equipment most of the shop around here, hence the rationale of doing this myself.

unless you have a newer machine like a hunter road force(what i use at work) your not going to be able to measure the run out if it has it but you should still be able to see it if it is significant

A round wheel should roll smoothly across a flat cement garage floor without sounding like flat spots are hitting. Youll be able to pick up on out-of-roundness pretty easily like that IMO. Just also realize that its not a super precision thing, so indicating off the wheel and finding .010" OOR isnt going to be a deal breaker.

This is what I do, it helps that a friend has one at his house.
Just put the wheel on and let it spin. Bends and non-roundness is obvious to to the naked eye, no measuring equipment needed.
