I no longer have access to appropriate facilities to work on my car, so I've been having my local dealership change my oil - they offer a good deal for military. Anyways, I'm about 3000 miles into my current oil change from them, and I'm down to below half on the dipstick again. A bit over 20,000 miles are on the clock overall. There's no leaking that I can see, and no puddling where I park. Should this be of concern? I've also noticed a pretty sharp drop in gas mileage over the last 4 months. I drive pretty conservatively, and normally I would make it well over 300 miles before gas light (which is about 13 gallons used IME). Now I'm typically hitting that mark around 280. What's the deal?
I know everybody's motor is different, but fwiw in my 2011 wrx (35k miles) I stopped using the Subaru oil because it would do exactly this. I'd consume half the dipstick in about 3k miles, happened twice. I know people here rag on Mobil1 5w-30 for whatever reason, but I've used that every other time and have several bottles with .5Qt in them because it hasn't consumed a drop yet. My engine is stock too.

And yeah winter is the cause of your poor gas mileage most likely. Mine has dropped too.

u got me all nervous so i checked my oil during lunch. 4k miles since last change and im at 7/8ths from full on the dipstick. im using rotella t6. its a 2011 wrx with about 49k miles. she is driven hard with some WOT entrance ramps almost on a daily basis

i used to check religiously every 1k back in the day, but the lowest ive seen the dipstick was at 3/4 from full after 5k miles which is when i change the oil.

Uncle Scotty would say that's impossible. EJ25s that run Rotella T6 will not consume a drop of oil. FACT.

Half the dipstick in 3k is not a big deal. I don't think consumption has much to do with brands either, its just variances in piston ring/cylinder tolerances. Some cars just use oil... Over 1 quart per 1000 miles is a problem
