Electric Drag Car on the Dyno at ECS Performance
This thing came into the shop yesterday and distracted everyone working for a half hour.
I know nothing about it besides the fact it was scary as hell getting that thing strapped down..it had live 0/2 power wires everywhere in the "engine bay". It's dead silent..all you hear is the tires and rollers. With the HP @ 50MPH set to 15, this thing put down 500WTQ. Knowing that number was wrong, we tried to do a 50MPH run to find out what the proper setting for the HP @ 50MPH should be. At 40MPH it put down 300WHP. The batteries blew up somewhere around 45MPH. According to the dyno tech, this thing would EASILY put down 2000WTQ once the dyno was properly calibrated. The owner claims this is the fastest electric drag car in North America.

I love electric, that car on the dyno ROCKS.
Here is a link to our local NW electric star: http://www.plasmaboyracing.com/whitezombie.php (street legal) Page may be out dated now but still a cool car. Some more information on the car: http://www.plasmaboyracing.com/history/2010.php Nice Video: http://www.onelectriccars.com/white-...ctric-car/614/ |

gotta love the fact that the power pretty much starts close or at peak power..not like your waiting for that small window of peak power like big turbos! guess effectively because you have so much powerband you can go much faster with less power.....

... average power required is the same ... but when your "curve" is a plateau

Usually you see the motors blow before the batteries. Those batts are expensive!!!

seems like you could run as fast as a normal car but with less power because accelleration should effectively be faster leaving the tree......you know!. either way sweet

I remember seeing some retard doing a burnout on an electic street bike and crashes. Short burst of power for sure!

A DC electric motor has 100% of available Tourqe at 0 rpm. (Stalled Rotor) This condition is bad for motor insulation because the current is at its peak. This is also why it is bad for the batteries.
An equation Tq= (hp x 5252)/Rpm 250 hp motor x 5252 / 1725 rpm = 761 lb/ft. Tq 1725 can be motor base speed. @ 5 rpm same motor 262,600 lb/ft. of Tq This case is true if current is not limited. We use banks of resistors to limit current on motors i work with regularly so they dont destroy our equipment. I am a maintenance technician on Electric Overhead Travelling Cranes. Or just a good motor controller and Battery managment system.

Since current needs to be limited, typically to 150% of the current rating of the motor for a given period of time, the torque is much less. Using a solid state motor speed control helps you do this much more efficiently than with resistors.
We also use IGBT's to switch current on and off to limit motor torque and thus the speed of the motor. IGBT's are transistors (semiconductor switches) that are typical in motor drives for cars, mining equipment, etc. Modern batteries are capable of outputting tremendous amounts of current and that generates heat. This heat is wasted energy and must be dissipated. Too much heat will cause damage to batteries possibly fire. These are hurdles that are being overcome as we speak by companies such as Tesla, and i patiently await the cost of such vehicles to equate to combustion engine vehicles. |

Not until recently at least at the company i work for was it deemed necessary to account for all the wasted energy. An energy study revealed that by switching to motor drives on 1 crane would save 300k a year in electricity, paying for the conversion in one year, and providing added benefit of mechanical reliability that cannot be achieved with contactors. Our facility has over 80 cranes. Thats 24 million dollars a year. It will never happen |
