Of my 23 mile commute, I have maybe 3-4 miles max of "flat and level". Everything else is hills/graded.

That's why in another post, while on cruise control, the only thing the MPG indicator is good for is for vehicle pitch. On the slightest of incline doing 60mph in 5th, it's left of middle.

I have 900 miles on the new Impreza already after having owned it one week. 217 were from the dealer bringing it in though.

I just filled up; first tank I could do a real hand calc on. 32.4 MPG with mixed city, highway, and intermediate. The computer had an average of 33.9. I'm satisfied with this, particularly given the car isn't even broken in yet.

Congrats on the new ride! Hopefully you'll like it for a long time. I have 13K on mine and still love it.

I see you have a manual. What do you use for shift points (RPM)? I see lots of folks not hitting those kinds of MPG numbers and am just curious. My CVT rarely goes over 2500rpm and has acceptable MPGs. Some guys on here regularly goose it beyond 3000rpm and have mpg problems.

Thanks, I'm liking it so far for the most part.

Shift points entirely depend on the situation. Being that it's still in the break-in period, I'm trying to refrain from cranking it up too high. I'm finding though for smooth shifts the car likes to be wound out a little bit at least. If I need to accelerate fast or if I want to up-shift while going up a hill, I'll occasionally take it to 3.5k.

I did somewhat try to go easy on the fuel use on this tank, but I'm guessing I'll be able to keep it at least above 30 mpg; pure speculation at this point though.

i took it to 4K very often when breaking in. broke 18K yesterday and i might have used 6oz so far on this oil change, currently at 4200miles. ]]

i think most of my shifts are around 3-3.5 if driving nice and 4.5-5k if a little more aggressive, lifetime has been 28mpg or so

I don't think it's a big issue to stay below 3-3.5k during break-in, but I can, so I am. My parents recently bought an Impreza with a CVT which I test drove a few times before buying. IIRC with the CVT unless you really feather it very lightly and accelerate very, very slowly, the RPMs shoot up well north of 3k. So yeah, I'm sure it's not really an issue.

The EPA rating for combined mpg presumes that we drive 55 percent of the time in the city and 45 percent of the time on the highway. Most people simply assume that's the case in their own driving. But many motorists - especially those in urban regions with lots of traffic congestion - spend far more time driving in city conditions than they do on the open road.

that right there... also take into the fact the cars in previous years often beat these estimates in said conditions (at least the tiny FWD econboxes for sure)

I've been running mine up to 3K during acceleration (until the big rpm shift at ~40mph) for the last tank of gas, and if the margin of error for the gauge is the same, it's been getting better mileage than the first tank keeping it at 2500rpm.

When you get a chance, do yourself a favor and run a GPS against your odo. What I discovered with mine was the speedo was right on but the odo was pessimistic. Also, in the case of my car, the mileage reading on the dash compares with the ACTUAL gps miles rather than the odo.

If I use my odo to calculate my mileage, it shows about 2 mpg lower per tank than if I calculate with gps miles. GPS + pump reading matches my dash reading for avg mpg. Note that I refer only to my car since I have no idea if it is the same for all.

Point is, you might be doing better than you think. Of course YMMV.

This is close for me. My dash is still a bit optimistic even after adjusting.
Odo is correct, dash is down 2.7%. That test was only 48 miles but I've seen others getting in that range too.

Last tank was 285 at fill up. I'm still pretty much averaging 23-25 a gallon.

My last fill was 30.1mpg, car reported 29.7mpg, 337.6 miles used 11.2 gallons. 75% highway between 55-82mph

Current tank is displaying 36.6 thanks to warmer outside temps relative to what MN had all winter at least. That should be good for about 34+ mpg calculated based onthe odometer.

I've only checked my odometer once and it was slightly off so calculated mpg should be slightly closer to the readout. However I haven't taken enough readings and done enough statistical averaging to get the correct value.

With the CVT the RPMs rarely go over 4000 for me. Most accelerations are in the 3000 to 3500. I can still get to the end of an on-ramp at roughly speed limit (60 to 65mph) and merge easily.

Loving the warmer weather. Windows are down and mpgs are up.

My cvt also rarely goes over 4000rpm unless Im drag racing priuses and smartcars.

Last tank, about 50/50. Did a 200km run from Toronto to Hamilton and back. Cruise on at 105 and typical city driving for me resulting in a 7.2l/100km avg actual. Or 32.66mpg.

^^

on a slightly more serious note: yesterday, i was less tame on the accelerator going up and down a bunch of hills and just wanted to maintain good speed up perhaps 5-7% grades at 65mph. CVT tach'd at around 3000rpm. really felt the engine was very comfortably providing me nice power and holding speed very well. of course the MPG gage was way to the left. tried take advantage of the dowsides of the hills though and made sure i stayed in "6th" gear with the paddle shifter. that driving (about 60 miles worth) yielded 34.8mpg on the computer including a cold start. (real calc, based on my experience is probably 1mpg less accounting for odometer and computer error)

Took my 2012 CVT PZEV Hatch on a little road trip this past weekend to Buffalo and back. Started off with around 60 miles on the first tank before I left, so I did the B trip reset, and headed west on Friday night, netting 27 MPG on the display, with the cruise set at 75 for nearly the whole trip (138 miles). Return trip on Sunday included a stop for a fill-up and shopping, and with a tailwind pushing me east, I ended up netting 33 MPG on the display (140 miles). MPG's for this trip on the display appear to be right on, as the overall MPG's on the display for the first tank was 28.5, precisely what I calculated after the fill-up. This is using 87 octane E10, assumed to be winter blend.

Of note, temperatures were 15-20 degrees warmer on the return trip. I ran the defroster minimally on the way out, with low heat the rest of the trip. Return trip, I ran only the fan on the coldest temperature setting. Wondering if it's possible that some of the MPG hit in colder weather might be due to the AC possibly being used to provide some warm air even when the defroster is not on.

Looking forward to more warm weather. Helps the gas mileage, and it also means I can enjoy the open moonroof once again...

So the weather is warming up and the trip odometer is going to reset soon. Here is my my average mpg over the last 9000 miles through the winter.

Again, I do alot of commuting so this is mostly highway miles at approx the speed limit.

Not looking for praise or critisizm, just posting my numbers.

^Damn, I'm like 10 mpg below that for winter. Granted a lot of my driving nowadays is traffic-based

that is awesome! what is the average speed reported for that chunk of miles?

also, roughly how long is your commute? (curious how often you have to start the car cold)

Im not sure exactly but avg speed is usually around 38-40. I can check the exact number later.

Commute is roughly 140 miles a day. 5 days a week. I usually let the car warm up before driving off.

E10 87oct gas (im guessing since i just go to the cheapest place i can find)

How far off is the had calculated MPG and what is displayed? My display was off by about 6% (overstated the MPG) before I had the dealer adjust it.
