Installing Factory Lighted Key Ring
So I am not the first to do this, see below.
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=728553 However I am the first to install it using the factory circuit. As in it operates just as the factory installed one does, not tied to the overhead dome light. So first up part numbers RK-TFA-011 subaru harness repair wires. 84661FC010 lighted ignition ring seen here: You'll note I've already gone ahead and cut off the factory connector and replaced it with some cheap barrel lugs. Feel free to use whatever connector makes you happy. Installation: First remove the lower cover off the steering column. That is the only trim that has to be removed! Second: Using a flat blade screw driver (larger one) gently pry the old plastic key ring off levering against the wiring harness and your hand. Be patient and firm and it will come off. It is simply a pressure fit. Oh Observe the orientation of the keying latch on the bottom!!!! Third: Work the bulky part of the lighted ignition ring under the upper portion of the column. You might have to lift it up a bit gently. The keying notch is on the bottom and matches up on both the black and clear one. Gently press it onto the cylinder once you get it started and are use it's lined up on the key, use some force to press it on the rest of the way. 4th Now the fun part. Up under the dash to the right of the steering column (left if you're upside down) is the entry control module. Seen here. I've highlighted the notch that you'll be adding the wire too. It's the number two pin. If you look closely at the connector you can the the pin marking for #1 #10, #11 and #20 to confirm that you're seeing the proper one. 5th Before proceeding make sure you've added the mating connector to the end of the pigtail. There is just enough to reach without getting into adding wire. 6th Unplug the connector. You'll notice a white section on it and a little hole on either side. This white section has to be lifted up (NOT REMOVED) to install the pig tail replacement. see below You might thinking how the hell? I used a 3/64th craftsman screwdriver from the micro kit to poke in the side holes and hit the releases. I also chewed the hell out of it lifting the large part up on the front and working slowly around the edges. Again note slow and careful and not too much force here. It doesn't have to be pretty just fit back in the connector and not break. 7th With the white piece lifted slightly insert the new pigtail into the slot. There is a keying piece sticking up in the connector in the center of the hole. The two legs of the metal connector on the pigtail straddle this key so you know it's in the right direction. With a little force it should slide in (that's what she said) and you can hear it click. 8th Now press the white plastic back down, smooth out any burrs you caused hacking it up, and plug it back into the module 9 Connect the new pigtail to either side of the lighted ignition ring. Doesn't matter which. (Unless you put in a LED) In that case this is the ground side 10 Route the other connector to constant power. The link at the top shows you where a good one is. I just tapped the existing wires I have for the in cabin lights I've installed so you're on your own here. 11 Enjoy 12 The odd thing is that it shuts off about 15 seconds after the driver side door is opened and closed. I would have thought it stayed on longer. If you're wondering I managed to do it all in ~50 minutes because I have +12v handy already. Oh I have 8 extra pigtails if people want to buy them off me. I'm thinking ~7$ shipped. Or you can go buy all 10 from SPX for 19$

You finally installed that ring you always talked about. According to your pics it doesn't look to hard to install so kudos for a good write up. on aside note, I installed the red pads you had sold to me a while ago and wow, good stuff.

haha yea it fell by the wayside. I really want the heated windshield wipers and the glass is about due for replacement. All this ice is obnoxious. And the computer is almost done hahah only 4 years later. (school tends to put things on hold)
