Default Suzuki UK to release 5 new models in 3 years.

Looks like at least the UK arm is alive and kicking.

Speaking at the launch of the 2013 model year Suzuki Grand Vitara and Jimny, European Chairman, Takanori Suzuki, has said the company will introduce five new models before the end of 2016.

The new Suzukis will range from a “very small car” to an SUV, with the first being the production version of the S-Cross concept, which debuted at the 2012 Paris Motor Show in September.

Fresh new face for 2013 Suzuki Jimny

Exactly what the S-Cross will be called when it reaches showrooms remains to be seen, but it is not a straightforward replacement for the current SX4. Instead, it will be a larger C-segment crossover based on an all-new platform, looking to steal sales from the ultra successful Nissan Qashqai.

The S-Cross, which has just been awarded best concept car honours at the 2012 Guangzhou Motor Show in China, will be powered by either a 1.6-litre petrol or 1.6-litre turbodiesel engine, and features the latest generation of Suzuki’s i-AWD intelligent four-wheel drive system.

Front-wheel drive only variants will also be offered – though given the efficiency of the i-AWD, it’s unlikely these will bring hugely significant efficiency gains.

The production S-Cross will not only remain faithful to the concept’s exterior looks, it is also said to include versatile seating for five and enough boot space to challenge class leaders.

Target buyers include young families and those with active lifestyles. It will be in dealership before the end of next year – though it is apparently undecided whether the finished article will appear first at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show in March or the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

All five proposed new models are intended to “underscore Suzuki’s commitment to the European market”, according to Chairman Takanori – a statement intended to reasure following the carmaker’s recent withdrawal from the United States. They will also chiefly focus on sectors where Suzuki is already successful.

Supporting this European expansion plan, Suzuki is looking to increase production at its Magyar plant in Hungary – which will help the company reduce the impact of continuing unfavourable European exchange rates with the Japanese Yen.

Too much competition with little to no support in the US.
