Default Chevrolet withdraws from BTCC

Chevrolet and RML will not contest the 2012 British Touring Car Championship, opting instead to focus their efforts on retaining their WTCC crowns. The manufacturer, whose BTCC and WTCC teams are run by RML, finished runner-up to Honda in last year's BTCC teams' championship, while Jason Plato ended the year third in the drivers' standings, having taken eight wins and 12 podiums over the season.

The Briton had previously helped carry Chevrolet to a title double in the 2010 BTCC season.

Chevrolet's withdrawal comes just a week after Plato announced he had landed a three-year deal to spearhead MG's return to the British series.
Chevrolet UK managing director Mark Terry paid tribute to the partnership with RML, saying: "I would like to wish RML the very best for 2012, and thank our many fans for their support over the last two years."

RML meanwhile will continue to run Yvan Muller, Rob Huff and Alain Menu in the WTCC, where it has taken the drivers' and constructors' crowns for the past two seaons.

RML managing director George Lendrum said the group remained committed to the BTCC, despite the fact it will not compete in 2012.
"We understand Chevrolet's decision to concentrate its motorsport programme on the WTCC in 2012," Lendrum explained.

"Despite the fact that we won't be involved in 2012, RML remain long term supporters of the BTCC and hope to be back in the future."
