Default 2000 2.5rs sputting/back firing/something smacking

The other day I was driving around and noticed when I was in 4th gear, I had a little hesitation in the acceleration. Left it alone, 5 days later about the same stutter was happening this time in 2nd.

I checked the spark plugs wires. One of them was pushed out a little bit. I snapped it back on and it seemed to run fine.

Now here it is a couple days later. Same thing but I can barely get it to hold 30mph. It stutters and has almost no power.

At one point it made two loud slaps that sounded like something was clanking. Like maybe a piston slap?

Now I'm at a stand still. I'm not engine savvy at all.

Any suggestions......

Changed spark plugs and knock sensor. When I took out the plugs, 1,2,4 had oil on the plug wire, and sludge stuff was in the plug walls...
Car ran fine for like 2 minutes, then the idle got hiccups.

Smelled pretty bad (oil smell) when I drove it into the garage)

checked o2 sensor, and about every other sensor i could find. they all were clean and plugs were snug.

It could be a bad cat. Pull your first o2 sensor out and see if it runs better. If it does you have a bad cat.The oil in your plug holes means you need to change your valve cover gaskets.

took my car over to a friends house who is a bmw mechanic. When I pulled up the first thing he said was bad cat, smelled like rotten eggs.....still going to look into more than the cat and the valve cover gaskets

just an update:
pulled the code and we got 1,2,4 misfire and emissions (but we took the o2 sensors out of the exhaust to see if it'd run any better, to which it ran like crap)
replaced the valve cover gaskets today, and tomorrow we are checking the timing belt

Update: took the timing belt cover off and check the timing, everything was fine.

Did compression test, was at 30-50 on all 4 cylinders. Was told bent valves :-(

Any suggestions before we pull one of the heads tomorrow

The important question is how are the valves bent? Did your tensioner fail and allow the belt to skip? Did you wrap the engine to the rev limiter and skip timing?

Sucks though. I have a full set of good 2.5 valves off a junk engine if you're interested.

I've babied it the last year or so. I was doing probably 59mph down the high way when I just noticed a drop in power. Then maybe drove it 4 miles going 25mph all the at home

My 02 rs has been doing that same thing kind of. I put new valve cover gaskets on after I found oil on the spark plugs. New plugs and wires and still is doing it.
