Default Valve tap? *Watch video*

Sound is heard when the camera moves closer to the left and right sides of the engine (hood closed obviously).

Is this the Subaru valve noise or just our good ole noisy boxer engines?

The sound is a little higher pitch in real life but is constant. Always there no matter what. Heard on both sides of the engine.

My car has 108,xxx miles and I have not done the 105k valve train maintenance. I don't know how to check valve clearance and really don't want to pay someone to do it (just had all my belts, TB tensioner, water pump an thermo done, $$$$$$$!!!).

If this is the common Subaru valve noise or valve tap, is it bad? Hasn't ever seemed to get worse or better.

I just did my valves and my engine sounds identical. I want to say it's the power steering pump that sounds like that.

Can't be because I can hear the noise specifically on the left AND right sides of the engine. Power steering pump is near the middle I believe, atleast the fluid container is.

With your ears, or a mechanic's stethoscope?

Ok, put a little faith in someone who has rebuilt about a half dozen of these engines. It's not valve noise. I can't say exactly what that noise is, but it's too distinct to be a valve tick.

Ok. Does it sound like something I should be concerned about? If you can tell by just a noise lol.

Also you said you've rebuilt your fair share of "these" engines. You are referring to the 2.2s right? (more specifically the phase 2 ones)

If so I just want to know how they have looked at high miles. Most common things to go wrong and other need to know things like that. Just trying to get info from people with actual experience with the 2.2s so I can take good care of mine.

Not a care in the world. You'll notice it sounds slower than an rpm, which implies that it's some accessory. My 91 Legacy made the same sound, as does my 97 OBS.

Keep coolant and oil in them, and they'll go forever. I have 230k miles on mine.

My 2007 2.5i has exactly the same noise, sitting next to a concrete wall it becomes really noticeable, but it's a subie thing. If you're not burning oil too badly there shouldn't be a problem. Try an oil system cleaner for a few hundred miles before your next change if you want to feel better about it.

There are obviously several 'sounds' going on in the video, and having the hood closed doesn't help distinguish the location, but to me the most obvious 'tapping'-like sound there is the normal sound of injectors opening/closing.

If it makes you feel any better my brand new '12 sounds the same way. I'm 99% sure it's the injectors ticking.
