Default ECU reset running rough

Not sure if this is fairly common, but every time I reset my ecu my car runs very poorly afterwards. Usually it idles very low (500rpm) and after revving, like when coming to a stop, it will fall even lower. Sometimes it has even died, and thrown codes due to the low idle. Is this normal? After a few hundred miles or so it runs smoothly, but yesterday it took 3-4 seconds of cranking to start. Any ideas?

First be sure the a/c, defrost, and excess electrical loads are off. After an ecu reset it is required to turn the key to on wait 20 seconds, turn to off. Then try to start. After starting, allow the car to idle for at least 7 mins. It is important that the accel pedal is not touched and that no loads are put on the engine during this time. If you can log, you can watch the trims adjust and stabilize and see when it stops moving around but usually it takes about 5-7 mins.

Thanks for the help. I did not go through the proper procedure, I guess. Do you recommend I redo the reset and do it correctly, or will it be okay? I'd imagine it's harder on the motor not doing so...

Running at really low rpm's can starve the motor of oil, though because there is very little load it generally doesn't make much of a difference. However I recently just had this issue on a completely different vehicle and it ended up being the EGR valve sensor. So you may check to see that whole system is in check.

Just a suggestion.
