Default Moving to Seattle/Kent

hello there. So yeah, looks like I'm officially moving to the Seattle/Kent area due to work relocation. Never have been to the Pacific NW. Closest I've ever been is Utah.

Coming from Miami, FL I'm both excited and of course a little hesitant due to friends and family that I'll leave behind and what I hear is the gloomiest weather in the US...lol

But when it comes to Subaru, I guess I couldn't be going to a better place

So, my job will be in Kent, I figure that's the city I'd probably find a place to stay.

I also figure I better start making some friends since I'm going to be all by myself so far away from my tropical homeland

so where do you guys meet up for car meets etc? any cool places to hang out in the area and such? I dunno, help me out guys! lol

Make sure your insurance is paid up, you may find your car missing in Kent.

Kent is the car crime capital of western washington.

Depends on where you park it, of course, but compared to other areas, the odds are against you.

Some people like it. It's on my list of 'never in a million years'.

Maple Valley is about 20 minutes from Kent and has been voted as one of the top ten places to raise a family in the US. Not that you need a family to live there but it's a nice suburb area. A lot nicer than Kent.

Kent is a big place. if you stay out of the valley, on the east hill you'll be better off. the farther you go east the better it gets.

I have lived in Kent/Covington since 1982, and although its changed. i still like it here. and have chosen to raise my own family here.

Never had a car stolen, never had my house broken into.

Maple Valley is nice. but if your looking for a house. expect to pay a fair bit more for it.

yeah I was looking more east, Covington/Maple Valley and doesn't look bad at all.

Also, this guy from my company I spoke to says he lives in Des Moines and says it's a good place to live.

But, after doing my research, Tacoma seems to have some of the newer nice condo complexes of the whole general area outside of Seattle. Would be about half hour drive to work but I don't really mind that.

I also decided I wanted to drive up there instead of having them ship my car lol

I live in Tacoma and grew up here, it's a great town to live in with lots of stuff coming up and lots of new things to do. Like any city there are better neighborhoods and worse ones; the north end by Point Defiance is nice, University Place, and parts of Lakewood and the south side aren't horrible. Honestly, I have been in some cutty areas of Miami and I don't think anywhere here is on that level.

Now, if you are working in Seattle there will be traffic on your commute depending on what shift you are working. It's true that it's only about 30 with out traffic but you should expect that it can be double and sometimes triple that with traffic. There is a great bus and train route you can catch in down town that goes up to Seattle. Working an off shift will be much better and I imagine coming from Miami you are no stranger to traffic.

Hope this helped, I love Tacoma but just wanted to clue you into the reality if you are working in Seattle.

Good luck!

hey thanks for your reply. I would be working in Kent. Close to Boeing actually. So I wouldn't have to be commuting all the way up to Seattle.

I'll just have to explore the areas myself and see what works out the best economically and also for commute etc..I'll be in one of those extended stays for up to 3 months if I need to. The first month is pretty much going to by without me being able look for rent. Bout 2 weeks after I get there I have to come back to Miami to go to South America, then will be back first week of October.

yeah, well, one of my first jobs was delivering medicine for a pharmacy and my route was the roughest parts of Miami. Overtown/Little Haiti etc...back then Wynwood was utter cow dung, now it's one of the most touristy areas here.

But anyways, I'm already set as far as dates. My last day in Miami will be the 31st and I have to be at work in Kent the 6th.

So I will be driving in my STI all the way up there (company will pay for gas, food, lodging). I just changed the oil this weekend and will probably rotate tires/get some anti freeze to take with as I think it's starting to get low. Make sure all is ok and hope the subie has as much fun as me doing a cross country road trip. I have to check into the hotel the 5th so 5 days of traveling should suffice. I might pass by Mt. Rushmore as I've never been and it's on the way.

I don't really go on facebook much anymore, does that rain city subie group have the info for meets on the page or i gotta ask?

Tacoma to Boeing would be much better for sure, they might even have a ride share thing. Tacoma is the second largest city after Seattle in western Washington, it's going to be the nicest option with the cheapest rent. As far as the fb page, I'm not on fb so I'm not to sure.

You need to request to join the group since it is a closed group. I believe the admin will ask you to share a pic of your car with him before allowing you in. After you have joined you can look at the events section on the facebook group to see the meets.

I already sent my request. Although there's an info on the side that says meets are every other Monday at the Redmond Town Center.

I guess there's more info when I join but there's gotta be other meet areas I reckon?

Tacoma to Kent would be a super crappy drive. you would be in traffic every day going to work and again coming home...

look at the WADOT traffic map at the time you would be driving. trust me, if you dont like sitting in traffic, you would hate yourself for doing that.

Auburn is right next to Kent. Just follow the usual rule of avoid the valley and you'll be alright.

If you're going to work at Boeing, you might want to live central to the other plants because you never know if they will send you up to Everett. I'm surprised you accepted a position at Boeing (if you're working at Boeing that is) as they're doing layoffs since Jan of this year.

I live in Renton and it's by far better than Kent but still really close to Kent but only issue is 405.

If you're interested in autocross I can totally recommend the club I race with -- Bremerton Sports Car Club. LOTS of Subie drivers and a really welcoming and knowledgeable group of people!

And our weather is actually REALLY nice most of the time. Shhh...don't tell anyone! I'm a transplant from sunnier climes myself, and I love it here.
