Default smell during everyday driving.

I have a 2006 outback 2.5L. During normal driving there is a plastic/rubber burning smell inside the car at stops. But I know its coming from the front of the car, but I cant identify from what. It smells worse outside the car. Does anyone know of common causes? Or have anything similar happen?

Over heated brakes can give off an "electrical burn" smell, I know it's not what you described, but it's worth giving your brakes a quick sniff

I checked out the exhaust when I first smelled it about a month ago. I thought it could be the brakes too. But not them either. It's strongest under the hood on the passenger side.

I had a funny smell on my 99 LGT a few years ago and it ended up being the oil that was leaking out of the failing headgasket that was running down the tranny crossmember and landing on the exhaust and burning off. Make sure you look for any fluid leaks

your oil filter is on the passenger side and I know when I've done my oil changes if I spill a little when putting on the filter, there will be a burning smell like what you are describing. If you haven't gotten an oil change within the past day or two then check to see if theres oil leaking any where. The smell you are describing makes me think that the oil filter is leaking and causing oil to be burned up. If you can't find a visible leak, check your oil levels to make sure you're not burning up all your oil and leaving your engine not lubricated. keep us updated

It could be the grease from a torn cv boot check both axles.

I've had that same smell coming from the passenger side area on my 2000 Impreza RS 2.5. I just bought the car a few days ago and hope that it's just oil or something that has spilled and is burning off. I'll let you know if anything becomes of it. Probably going to put the car up tomorrow and check under it.

Sorry I haven't responded yet. Thanks for the other advise, I will check it out tonight and see if I can find anything. I know that its not a torn cv boot. But ill check for leaks. I don't see any drips on the floor in my garage. But I will look.

If it is the oil filter, then it would be leaking right onto the headers so there wouldn't be anything on the ground especially if its a small leak. And then once you start up your car the small bit of oil sitting on the header will burn up and that will be the smell. Obviously I can't be positive that is whats causing the smell but I've had that happen to me before
