Default Let's play: Guess That Noise!

So here is my new (to me) 99 Outback. Traded a guy my WRX for him to repair (had developed a knock) and in return got this Outback which he had supposedly done head gaskets, timing belt and water pump, and a clutch on. Seemed like a great deal, even had the local Subie dealer check it out and they said it was the cleanest car of that year they'd seen. Of course, I get it home and it starts to sound like this when I start it up the next day.

Did some reading and it sounds like these cars have an issue with piston slap... and the noise DOES quiet down when the motor is warm. But it still freaks me out.

Have a listen and tell me what y'all think.

Guess is right, It could be piston slap, can't really tell from here, I would take it to a shop and see what they say.

that is not piston slap atall. i would say more likely its lifter /s. how aqbout you have the lifters / tappets adjusted and see how things sound.

Definitely not slap. Slap sounds more like rod knock. That's definitely external sounding like something in the head; shims, valves, springs, etc.

1. He could have used the wrong head gaskets(used the sohc ones) and it will make the same sound
2.Could be a bad tensioner, they are known to make noise when they are failing.

Took it to a garage and they told me the car is in need of a valve adjustment. Good ears, guys! I'll have it done and report back to see if it sounds better.

Sounds valvetrain related to me. I would check intake and exhaust valve cam clearances. Are the heads SOHC?

Ask the guy if he replaced tensioner/and pulley and if he replaced idlers, bearing failure of cogged idler allows it to contact the oil galley makes a very simular sound (telegraphs sound like a internal engine noise rod knock etc.)
