Default BMW Unveils eDrive

At the Auto China 2012 show in Beijing, BMW introduced eDrive, the automakers new designation for the drive technology used in electric and plug-in hybrid cars from BMW i. BMW i is BMWs sub-brand for electric vehicles.
BMW eDrive is essentially the cars electric drivetrain, comprised of an electric motor, lithium-ion battery, and BMWs intelligent motor management system.
In 1972, for the Olympic Games in Munich, BMW converted a 1602 sports sedan (pictured below ) into an electric vehicle that was to travel the length of the marathon, 26.2 miles (42.2 km). The car still runs and made an appearance at the 2011 Frankfurt Internationale Automobile Austellung (International Automobile Show).
In 1993, BMW unveiled the E1 test fleet, a two-door, four-passenger city car, and the Mini E, based on the Mini Cooper, in 2009.

More recently, the BMW ActiveE, based on the current 1 Series, was unveiled in 2010 and trials started in early 2012.
BMW is providing a fleet of ActiveE and Mini E electric vehicles for use at the 2012 London Olympics and will be offering the i3 and i8, both from BMW i, starting in 2014.

That's crazy BMW had the electric tech in the 70's to go 26.2 miles. They probably should have jumped on that one.
