Default Junior's 2003 WRX Project

I have no clue if this is the correct section so if not, PLEASE just move it and dont delete it. Want to kind of keep track of what I'm doing to look back on so thought posting it here would do that and allow me to get some opinions/comments/suggestions.

I was forced to sell my old bugeye a few years ago due to a situation out of my control. Finally decided to jump back in years later and traded my b7 a4 for this 2004 WRX. After one day with the thing I realize how much of a lemon this thing really was. Pieces falling off, boost leak after boost leak, bow struts, etc.. So I figured if I had to do a lot of work, I might as well go all out and try to make it my own.

First up, front end swap Since Im never gonna get MY bugeye back, I dont wanna see a constant reminder of that every day. So before anyone starts in with the "You shoulda just bought a blobeye" talk, I like projects. I like learning new things. I have never done a front end swap so here's my chance. I have a 3 month old new born so Im only working on this during my very limited free time.

Day I got it looked like this

Getting started stripping

Off comes the radiator supports

STAY TUNED, if you want...

138,000

Let me also preface this by saying I have a 3 month old son so gonna hit it as much I can. So, I sourced a JDM Version 8 Blobeye STi front end with the large STi fogs that will be here tomorrow

For now though, today my 1 inch hub centric spacer/adapters arrived to mount my 5x114.3 Rota SVN Limited Edition Chameleon wheels. Plan is to go with fender flares. Definitely changed the stance. I also swapped out my rear seat for an STi rear seat and added a NRG quick release steering set-up with neo chrome weighted shift knob.

Did you find the front end locally. Are you doing engine mods...;and if so are you looking at a FMIC or keeping the new front end looking stock? I'm new to Subaru ...so I'm watching you and others closely to pick up on how to's.

Ordered from a company out of California. 2 days later it was in my driveway.

Got the new support bolted up, test fitted the hood and headlight to make sure line were good. Also removed TMIC so i can go FMIC and removed downpipe to go with a catless. Filled trunk holes as well to go wingless.

Sprayed the support flat black to protect from rust, had to make sure to leave the "JDM-ness" lol

Well, pretty upset at myself. I wanted to do this swap so bad I was trying to source a front end for $1300 or less for weeks. I messaged TONS of companies asking if they had any. Finally, I found someone who did. However they hadn't listed it on their site yet so they just emailed me a few pics. After a phone call I made the purchase. The day of delivery I was running late for an appointment so when it arrived I pretty much gave it a very quick once over just to make sure nothing was broken and went on my way. So I've spent the last 2 days disassembling the clip, bolting in the new support, fitting pieces, etc.. today I get to the fenders and there Is a pretty decent gap fender/door. I step back and it finally hit me. I just now saw it...

I ordered a wagon front end by mistake. I can't believe it. I'm so pissed. I looked back at our original convo and I only asked for a wrx front end I never specified sedan. That's on me it just sucks that at no point THEY didn't say wagon. So hard lesson learned. Rushed into something out of excitement and now I gotta make the best of a bad situation. Pretty bummed though.

So at this point I'm gonna continue on with it, since I planned on putting flares on it anyway, and I'll make the first sedan/wagon. Segon? Wagdan?

Vent it...To clearance with door open. Louvered? Mod the fenders somehow..Sorry to hear that how big is the gap ? 1/2 inch? Wouldn't they take it back as long as you bought the correct part from them? Shipping costs too much??

No clue what you mean by vent it..

Gap isnt so much that its big, its that it very uneven. They dont have a sedan and shipping alone is almost $350. Just gonna make this work and have something "unique"

Since the car was gonna be down anyway I pulled the uppipe, downpipe and turbo the other night. Have an s*rs downpipe and turboxs uppipe incoming, catless. Also have a grimmspeed turbo inlet incoming. Still need to figure what turbo I wanna go with. Rear bumper was damaged so pulled that, have 04-05 taillights incoming sometime this weekend so those will be put on and Ill get a 04-05 sti rear bumper to match. Also pulled the spoiler and filled the holes.

Installed some 2005 sti door cards, was a bit more of a pain than I planned on as I didnt know the fitment issue so I had to get all new door brackets to fit them. Look good though.

The wagon front fenders with sedan rear flares looks a hell of a lot better than wagons with the sedan front fenders and no full conversion thats for sure. Keep up the good work!

Looking good.. when it's all done it won't be noticeable (hard to see from pics). Was your car repainted blue ...is that the original color?

I totally fell off of this post and let all 3 people who were watching it down lol. Couple of updates since the last update...

Picked up a set of off brand coilovers for now (Maxspeedingrods). Install was the biggest pain in my ass I've ever dealt with. EVERY. SINGLE. BOLT was rusted and seized. Snapped 3 and rounded 2 more before finally buying a blow torch to help get them off. Sacrificed several sockets that I had to hammer on or JB Weld on in order to get them off. Took several days to get them all off (I only give the car about an hour a day of wrenching time). Did all the pads and rotors at the same time.

Also picked up a aeroflow front splitter for a 2008 narrow body that I cut down and shaped a bit better to mount up to the v-limited lip. Couple of splitter rods and there she is. Also grabbed a rear vortex generator replica/knockoff/tribute that you can see in one picture mounted on the bumper (not on car). Ditched the headlight intake duct lights and picked up a set of blacked out HID headlights I polished up nice and shiny.

Having a major fitment issue with the FMIC and its piping while trying to keep my fogs. As you can see currently it still has some gap in the front under the headlights but I will keep making adjustments because I refuse to lose.

Currently on order I have some front seats and 2 catch cans. Plan on rotating the intake manifold, powder coating the piping copper and possibly rotating my VF48 because I ****ing feel like it lmao.

Disregard my grey hanging ghost who photobombed the pic, it is halloween afterall....

Well I sort of fell off this post as well. I've been very busy with my 04,taking off every possible part that bolts on. Funny how I chose today to come back to see what you have done so far. Looking good. Did you have any issues with closing the hood after installing the FMIC pipping? FMIC too tall to fit behind the front bumper? Good luck with adjustments. The front bumper assembly is fairly unforgiving if using factory pins and bolts. Looks like your improvising some what. Question for you....Are all WRX hoods aluminum? Or just STI?

I have those coilovers, not bad for $350 new! The rears don't fit super well, though.
