News Air filter

What air filter are you using in your '12-'14 Impreza? I have the K&N and some people say that it isn't made well.

I'm running the stock paper filter for now in our Impreza. The K&N is okay, but it does allow for smaller particles to pass the filter than the paper does...It's nice that it's reusable though. I run them in my other three cars without a problem.

I've been considering the K&N as it will pay for itself over time.

I use Wix because they're inexpensive and well regarded.

I have a K&N and like it.

Hold on a second. you own a K&N filter but you cant determine for yourself whether what people say about it is true? Are you..... kidding me

It's the best for engine longevity as far as I can tell, not the best for performance - the opposite of K&N.

AEM dry-flow filter. Supposedly just as good as K&N but without having to worry about oil on the MAF sensor.

I have K&N air filters in all my vehicles. It's been 10+ years in my Explorer (184k) and Odyssey (190k) and they are not falling apart or anything. You don't need that much oil on it. Someone who doesn't know what they're doing ends up with oil all over the MAF.

I have the AEM as well. Are people leaving the secondary air filter in place? I noticed it is not really user-serviceable, and will be destroyed upon removal....

It's plastic riveted in place. I broke them and removed it.

Have used Fram, stp, subaru and Napa gold " wix ". Every 2-3 oil. Changes. I'd say as long as you don't let the filter get too dirty any one will serve you well. I can't say I saw any noticeable differences between any of the brands other than some using larger spaced out pleats or thinner closer ones

If you're referring the charcoal filter that is for catching any stray vapor coming out of the engine ( one of the few elements of the PZEV system ) People have removed, reinstalled with no noticeable gains or losses of any kind.

I installed the Mahle brand replacement filter bought off Amazon. No difference in performance and I noticed it had a couple extra folds of paper compared to stock, so conceivably could have more filter material.

I had the AEM for 2 months. I was not very impressed. The filter is heavy as hell. The car felt sluggish under acceleration. I did notice a 1MPG increase. Not worth it IMO.

i haven't noticed any difference between the AEM and a Mahle filter that i removed.

keep forgetting to actually look at some of my logs to see if there is a difference or not.

What, if anything, does this do to the sound of the intake?

Nothing noticeable. However I did remove mine, and when I pull my car into the shop at work I hear a faint whistling air sucking sound for a brief moment when I hit the throttle. Idk if that has anything to do with the filter being removed or my AEM filter.

Is this carbon filter (the secondary one) installed in every Impreza/Crosstrek or just the PZEV rated ones? Just wondering if it's killing any added flow my K&N is providing, if it's even in my car?

I've read it's only on the PZEV. And removing it I have thought about, but then I was curious to see if it's actually restrictive. I pulled out the air box and paper filter, only leaving the charcoal filter. It's like a screen door. Not restricted IMO.

I think I might try driving around the block with no airbox just to see it it really makes any difference.

Curious to know your results and if it causes any check engine to light up.

I use this, changed annually (approx every 13k miles):

http://www.amazon.com/Fram-CA9997-Extra-Guard-Filter/dp/B001C6Q34S

No issues to report. If the filter wasn't doing its job, out-of-spec particulates would have shown up in my used oil analysis reports, but all is well.

After a certain point, I think sometime in 2013, all Imprezas are PZEV regardless of the state you live in
