i have a custom exhaust with a thrush welded muffler, which is basically a knock of flowmaster. I had the resonotor remove and it is raspy in the upper rpm range, drones on the highway. On tuesday I'm getting a cherry bomb welded into the mid pipe as a resonator, in order to get read of the highway drone(hopefully). I can update after i get installed. and when i get a chance i'll upload the videos i have so you can take a listen.

get headers, will need to be cut and rewelded, and get 2.5inch stainless steel piping with a magnoflow catalytic converter and magnoflow muffler tip and it will sound great. most muffler shops can do this

Hotrodders like Magnaflow a lot for sound. Many people say good things.

Otherwise Subaru guys have a number of favorites, like the Stromung mufflers for example.

RS25.com has a Sticky thread specifically for exhaust sound and video clips of Subarus with various exhaust setups. Along with straight Youtube browsing, you can find a LOT of variety and kind of work your way through some options.

A lot of the choice comes down to what kind of sound you want. The choice in the midpipe setup will also depend on the sound you want (straight, resonator, glass pack). I will suggest that you should run some form of inline damping device in the mid section. A resonator or small glasspack does wonders for dropping dB and rasp from the exhaust. A straight through muffler alone with no additional sound damping aid is rather quiet loud as in people can hear your car from a mile away loud when you're on the gas. You need to live with this while driving around too. Plus, everyone around you also must live with your noisy/quiet car.

While you're down there, you have the option to swap in high flow cats, again Magnaflow under their Car-Sound brand offers low cell count metal substrate cats that flow really well.

As ImprezaJake hinted to, headers. For any level of performance gain on these NA engines, you really do need to address the header first and foremost. Good makes power. Bad makes nothing. The best option out there is TWE, and their headers do make solid power gains.

best thing to do is wait. save up for a catback meant for the car...then in the future headers, cat, etc
