Default RPM falling slowly when in gear (clutch pressed), normal when in neutral.

Hey all,

Apologigies if you think this is in the wrong place....

This issue just started on a long trip that I had today. Shortly after noticing, it went away. It happened long enough to have me concerned though.

For the 3 or so years that I have owned my 2000 Legacy GT Limited (manual transmission), the RPM's have been somewhat slow to fall from anywhere over 2500 RPM. It was kind of annoying, but I could live with it.

So on this trip, I had been going about 75mph for about 45 minutes (short breaks in between due to semi's passing on hills..... )

Once I reached a stretch with a slightly lower speed limit, I noticed that when pressing the clutch in, the RPM's were hanging around 2500 RPM or so....UNTIL I would change the gear and put it in neutral. Then the RPM's would suddenly drop like normal. While doing testing, I would get going about 60mph, and I wouldn't even have to touch the gas. It would just keep itself going as if the cruise control was on- but it certainly was off.

After doing more "conservative" driving, with light accelerations/decelerations, everything went back to normal.

Have any thoughts as to what was going on/what to keep an eye out for?

Possibly related: After the car sits in 85 degree heat all day, upon startup, the RPM's race to about 2000RPM, sometimes a bit higher. Never noticed this before.

Thanks in advance!
