40k on turbo'd my00 RS
Hello all(since I'm new here) OK......I have been searching and reading through this forum now for a few days...I just purchased a MY00 RS thats turbo'd...I bought it form a dealership and they didn't know much about it....I have the origanl owners name but can't track him down...well I went to a perfomance shop here and the kid there said he knew the car as these are pretty rare in COLO...said he thinks it has been turbo'd since it was brand new...anyway...I am trying to learn as much about this vehicle as possiable before I do anything to it, I will admit I really don't know much about this kind of setup....OK so after that if any one could point me to some sites or shed some basic knowledge kind of stuff on me I would greatly appreciate it...This forum is great but bit a little too technical for me right now..THANKS ALL in advance and sorry for the long post!
J

i'm sorry. 1st generation Imprezas in the US did not have a turbo model.
This is what i'll say first............. If there is a boost guage, see how much boost it makes (PSI or other). If it makes like 5-8 psi than that mean your car should be running on stock pistons. To run more boost you may need to low the CR (compression ratio). You can run up to 10 PSI but it really hurts the pistons. FuJi |

Ah, well first off, Welcome to the club. Secondly. I am surprised a dealership would take a turbo RS as a trade in. Thirdly, I wouldn't have bought a used turbo RS from a dealership. I would suggest you find a good machnic friend and do a compression test on your car adn pretty much get the thing checked out. Now it sounds to me you either have : A turbo ej25, a turbo legacy motor or a wrx motor swap. Please take pictures and post, also talk to locals in the rockey mountain forum. I am almost 100% sure someone can help you out with your car and teach ya alot!
But please ask away about your car...there are many people on this board who would be willing to help ya on your quest to learn more about the RS. Welcome -Neal |

Tell me the original owner's name - I might be able to help you find him. Most of the turbo RS's here in Colorado are in pretty good shape.

Drac9- Sounds good I might come down next weekend If I do I will let you know
ok well the install was done by JC sports....the turbo says IHI turbo on it has some other numbers part number and serial but I can't remeber them off hand...The original Owner was Sean Cordova...I'm currently running 5psi (well is what the boost gauge says, seems to be working cause when the cars off it sits at zero. Well that's about it......THANKS all....it's really great everybody here is very helpful J P.S. raced a new vette tonight started out in a two lane left turn smoked him around the corner, he was losing traction and had my front bumper at his rear by third gear....pretty sure he was on it pretty good but than we had to shut down cause of traffic .....damn though if that was with 5psi I need some internals |

sorry for the kinda double post.....
have a question????? my air/fuel gauge is not working properly(I think and for the love of god hope it is or I'm running way to lean) it is acting really sparaticly(sp) it is all over never goes into rich even when I'M WOT and most the time when I am WOT it drops completly off the lean end ....and when I'm just driving it will jump around like crazy when I'm holding a steady rpm or won't even be reading....also sometimes when I put the clutch in to shift(always have my foot off the gas) it will jump up from not even readiing to the middle one (stoich or what ever it is) damn sorry about that just kinda worried about running lean....but today I checked my plugs and it doesn't seem to be detonating(which is a cause from running lean right??????) anyone know why the gauge is doing this or is it working fine?????? oh also it's a Phantom gauge THANKS ALL J |

I am guessing it is using the rear O2 sensor which is not getting hot enough or it has an extra O2 sensor which isn't hot enough. JCS used a vortech 4:1 rising rate fuel pressure regulator, which up here in the mountains maintains a nice rich environment for the pistons.
Also, when my Autometer phantom gauge itself got too hot (like when I stacked three gauges on top of each other in the dash like a pyramid and the two under the phantom AF heated up the AF gauge). Then it would read sporadic and intermittantly. I would still get an EGT gauge installed ASAP to monitor the tuning. SubySports at 719-630-SUBY can do that for you. Does the turbo have 2 bolts holding the intake onto the turbo inlet, or is it held on with a silicone hose? The 2 bolt would be a legacy turbo and shouldn't go over about 7 psi on 93 octane on a model year 2000+ motor or you will maybe crack a piston. That 7 psi in Denver is like 5.5 psi at sea-level and is good for about 230 - 240hp and will build 5 psi by 2,200 rpm and feel like a supercharger, but power drops off about 5,500rpm although you can do pull redline if you want to it will be better to shift at 5,500. If you have the silicone connector clamped onto the turbo itself where the inlet is, then you have the ball bearing VF22 they were selling. This will build 5 psi closer to 2,800 rpm and pulls hard into redline. With a timing controller I am running up to 15 psi on my MY99 shortblock which handles more boost than your 2000 motor can. I don't recall this shawn/sean - there is one with a 98 turbo I think. I would be happy to inspect the car and see how it is set up if you want. I've been turbo'd since September 2000 now, friday the 13th to be exact Larry |

Well found out why I was getting minor detonation the car had BKR5 NGK plugs in it(which I was told are made for an NA setup, stock are number 6) so now i bought NGK BKR7E-11 haven't put them in yet.....
anyone know what gap needs to be run? It wouldn't be stock would it? Shouldn't the gap be a bit smaller than stock? Oh and I finally got some pics will post them soon Also think I might head down to the springs today........here is my cell number 720-309-8879....would love to have a mini meet if you guys from the springs want to....THANKS J |

Braden called me about the car.
I would assume he set your gap at aout 0.035 while stock is 0.040-0.044 Larry |

Oh yeah and failed emissions.......failed HC and NOx...HC was probably from the plugs and NOx was due to having to sit and wait so the cats didn't stay lit......gonna try again today with a few tricks Bradren told me to try.....also anybody have any thoughts on why it failed? J |

Could be too much fuel pressure, plugs, rings, cats...
