Your panning skills are ridiculous. The second shot is awesome as well. Looks good like always!

curious to the guys with low shutter speed pans, are you using a mono pod or a tri pod for your pans?

Neither. Rigs are attached to a car and driven slowly next to the subject. Someone mentioned it earlier in this thread.

He's talking about the motorsports shots I'm assuming. Most likey JDMChris' shots. He's a panning animal.

Rig shots involve the rig being attached to the car that is the subject, not usually a second car. Rigs attached to second cars are usually done for high profile video/cinematography work. I pan handheld. |

I think most people do it by hand but I'm assuming that 70-200 f/2.8 gets heavy after a while.

Eh you get used to it. Although, you do learn to strip the camera as much as possible. Things like battery grips often get left in the bag for long days.

I always have two bodies, both with grips, during shoots (10+ hours for weddings). Even when I had a 300mm f/2.8 I never really used a tripod or monopod. 70-200 is light compared to that I will occasionally use a monopod if I am going to be shooting >4k photos in less than 2 hours all from the same position (sports for print sales). I prefer to do panning shots hand held.

Im eyeing that 300 2.8 II. Going to rent it for the next time our team is running RallyAmerica and will be considering the purchase.

No problem, I'm a fan of your stuff!
I got my new lens yesterday. 85mm f/1.8 USM. I messed around with it a little. (I didn't shoot the car). I have to say the image quality is amazing, even when cropping pictures. It's razor sharp and I couldn't be happier. It's nice to finally have some decent glass. |

If you stop it down a little bit, you'll be REALLY blown away by it's quality. Even at f/2.8 it is going to be incredibly sharp. That being said, I shoot almost all my shots wide open. That's what you pay the big bucks for!

You can't beat it for less than 400 bucks!! I was shooting mostly at 2.8 yesterday and was amazed. Now I'm going to want more qualty glass though.

Super sharp! Cropped at least 50%. Obviously looks better on Flickr.

Those shots are amazing. It really makes me want to go with a full frame camera for portrait stuff. You can't beat the look and feel of it.

The two on top are taken with the 5dMKII and the other two with the 7d.
I think the 85L does it part too but your right the look you get with the full frame body is totally another thing. |

As much as I do enjoy shooting automotive and motorsports related things portrait stuff is what I really enjoy. I bought then camera for the birth of my twins and it has gotten out of control from there.
In time I will upgrade to better equipment but I'm pretty happy where I'm right now for only shooting seriously for less than a year. |
