Default Hard drive instead of flash drive?

I was wondering if anyone ever tried using a usb powered hard drive in their car instead of a flash drive.

I'm trying to paste the link but it's not working on this phone.it keeps cutting off the address. I'm looking at a western digital elements portable hdd. Only power it uses comes from the usb cord.

I have a 27 hour trip coming up and would like to just have my whole music collection at my disposal.

I've never had a car stereo with a USB input, so no first hand experience. In theory should be okay; the two concerns would be a) HDD power draw vs stick (does your HU have any power limitation, maybe check owners manual), and b) whether the HDD can hold up to bouncing around while driving.

How big is the HDD (GB)?
I bought a 128GB thumb drive for my wife. That's a lot of music.
It was about $30 as I recall.

I agree with the previous posts.

In theory it should work. But using a traditional hard drive is not good in a moving environment. Cars that have built-in hard drives are using rugged types.

I too would use a very large usb stick. Unless you want to use hard drive then I would recommend an external SSD; which has 0 moving parts, so you're free to bounce around.

Terrible idea.
1. Motion kills HDDs
2. HDDs use more power - it may not actually power on via your cars USB power without getting a higher amperage usb plugin.
3. SSD/Flash Drives have less latency and faster read/write speeds - I believe many cars search the media drive through before you can access the content to look for new files.
4. Extreme temps kill HDDs too.

I say get a 128GB Flash Drive because if you keep turning the hard drive on and off it's bound to fail quicker.

I guess I've been living under a rock... Didn't know they got flash drives up that big. I have a micro 32gb flash drive, but that's only about 1/3 of my music.

I'm really glad they are getting cheap. I remember buying my first flash drive like 10 years ago. 1gb and it was 70 bucks.

Default 256gb

Amazon has a 256GB Flash Drive for $48.
The 128GB is $23.
