Default Pioneer AVH-2400BT install on my 2013 Impreza Sport Premium

I thought I'd post a walkthrough of replacing the head unit on my 2013 non-WRX/STi Impreza.

Please view these links for reference:
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2312813
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2360105
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...1&postcount=18
http://ae64.com/Subaru-20-pin-harness-install.htm
http://ae64.com/aswc-install.htm

If you are installing a different unit and want to utilize the factory USB port:
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2379118

Here's another post I made on installing an underseat subwoofer: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...5#post38571485
And here's a thread I made on another forum of me building a fiberglass subwoofer box for my RX-8: http://www.rx8club.com/interior-audi...8-pics-143576/

I ordered the "20-pin forward" (http://ae64.com/20-pinfwdharness.htm) harness from http://ae64.com/ (SVXdc on this forum) with the 3rd steering wheel control (SWC) wire and an additional 16-pin harness with the "reverse sensing" input for a backup camera. For navi units, you can also get the "vehicle speed sensing" wire on this harness as well. I used the Scosche kit for the dash and the Axxess AWSC for the steering wheel controls.

First we start with the wiring:
http://i.imgur.com/AIWOm.jpg

I wanted the install to look good so I used wire looming and heat shrink when I built the wire harness:
http://i.imgur.com/vjSQa.jpg

Zip-tied out of the way:
http://i.imgur.com/tEbD6.jpg

All the harnesses prepped:
http://i.imgur.com/LYmkt.jpg

Remember to slide the heat shrink on first before soldering the connections:
http://i.imgur.com/xqRPV.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/VvzSg.jpg

All the connections made in accordance with http://ae64.com/Subaru-20-pin-harness-install.htm and http://ae64.com/aswc-install.htm

Here's the finished harness:
http://i.imgur.com/9IH7X.jpg

Plugged in:

Everything I need for the install:

Factory head unit:
http://i.imgur.com/MQLlz.jpg

Start by prying the top of the bezel forward. Trim tools are a good investment at this point:
http://i.imgur.com/beSKA.jpg

And then pry the bottom forward:
http://i.imgur.com/x2w0H.jpg

You will need to disconnect the manual A/C controls on both sides at this point to pull the radio out the rest of the way.

The passenger side can be reached by compressing the stoppers on the sides of the glove box, like so:
http://i.imgur.com/kK6fm.jpg

Then you will have to release the round clip by pushing in the detent on the white part and pull the cable assembly out of the retaining clamp.
Right side:
http://i.imgur.com/DWZ8c.jpg

Left side (careful, that silver pipe may be HOT if you’ve driven recently) :

Disconnected:
http://i.imgur.com/ygx5a.jpg

There is a clip connected to the hazard button which has to be disconnected at this point. Sorry I forgot to take a pic.

Now the radio can come forward some more and then drop out of the way (note I used foam wrap to keep from scratching anything:

Remove the 4 screws around the head unit and pull forward.

http://i.imgur.com/QYmrl.jpg

Then disconnect the wiring harnesses and remove the radio:
http://i.imgur.com/fmh8j.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/PxFYs.jpg

Make all your connections on the back of the new head unit:
http://i.imgur.com/BiMbh.jpg

Begin routing your wires through the sides of the dash. I routed the Bluetooth mic and backup camera wires on the left with the RCAs and remote turn on lead on the right.
http://i.imgur.com/pkB0x.jpg

Plug in all your harnesses:
http://i.imgur.com/oqE2x.jpg?1

Turn on the ignition and test the radio to make sure it comes on. Also check to verify that all the speakers work as well as the steering wheel controls:
http://i.imgur.com/ZFJbK.jpg

Turn the ignition back off and begin putting everything back in place. Install is the reverse of removal.

Now we begin to route the Bluetooth mic. I did this backwards. I should have put the mic in place first and worked downwards to avoid having any slack wire left over. This is how I did it though.
Tucking the wire under the dash and under the trim:
http://i.imgur.com/9jdM8.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/V10wj.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/mtwQv.jpg

Wire tucked under the headliner and the mic clipped to the rear view mirror:
http://i.imgur.com/0XdSn.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/38jbW.jpg

And there you go:
http://i.imgur.com/Pw3Ga.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/TEO9S.jpg

Navigation via MotionX GPS Drive app:
http://i.imgur.com/CxEfK.jpg

Well, there you have it. I will be posting other walk-throughs on installing an amplifier, speakers, and rear view camera soon.

beautiful install man, i might tackle something like this soon, so now with the ae64 harness what steering wheel controls work? I don't know if you have the call, end call, and speak button like my 2011 wrx has but if you do what have those buttons become?

HOLY PICTURES BATMAN!

Great writeup, unit looks great... like the night shot. Also awesome mic location, nice and out of the way, blends in with the mirror.

which phone do you have? Any word if these headunits will work with iphone5? I have a 4 but I do plan on upgrading. And I'm mostly interested in the motion x gps drive app to show up on the screen like yours. BTW I'm so glad I stumbled onto your post, because I could not find anywhere saying that the 2400bt is compatible with motion x drive app.

I am also interested in how you got the motion x gps software to show up on your screen. I just installed a AVH 3400BH in my 09.

I believe you need that cable with the usb and 3.5 jack on one end and the iphone/ipod connector on the other end.

Yeah, you need the special cable: http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-CD-IU51V-iPhone-Navigation-models/dp/B004HW6F74/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1353720029&sr=8-8&keywords=avh-p2400bt
Any app with a video out will display on the head unit. Waze also works well for navigation.

I have an iPhone 4S. As of now, from everything I've read, the new iOS 6.x software (and thus the iPhone 5) does not work with Pioneer head units. Other manufacturers are reporting the same problem and are waiting on a fix from Apple. I have not updated my software yet because of this.

On both my avhp2300 and 1400, the iPhone 4S works with the iPhone charging cable. They also both work with the pioneer cable.

What you did here is simply awsome! When it comes to the wiring, I am very particular and what you did with your harness was fantastic. That is the kind of work that will prevent niggley problems moving forward.

I recently traded my '03 WRX for a '13 Impreza premium. Along with many others here, I am not exactly enamored with the factory unit, although turning off the eq and loudness has helped a lot.

I am much more serious about my home audio system than the car, but still like something decent. In the perfect world, built in gps, (Garmin based please), Sirius XM, and the use of all the original connections, (SWC's, USB, and 3.5 jack), would be a thing of beauty. If I could use the factory mic, that would be even better.

I am very, VERY picky about wiring and I commend you for what you have done. (Where is the thumbs up icon when you need it?) You did it right. I hope others pay attention here!

I disconnected both the right side and left side A/C controls. Is there supposed to be something else disconnected? Mine still won't come out.

EDIT: Figured it out.

Looks awesome, I actually ordered the same head unit. Love how it looks, how is the ASWC working out for you? I held off on buying it because I had a few issues with it in the past. The song would change on its own, FM station would change on its own, and once in a while it would change from BT to FM, etc. on its own. It drove me nuts. Hopefully you're having better luck with it.

Wow, that makes me want to learn how to solder instead of using butt connectors all the time. Most impressive!!

ASWC works well. I have no complaints. There have been two times where it just stopped working but came back after I restarted the car - that's it.

If all the bugs I experienced are all worked out like it seems, I might pick up another one. Just installed my Pioneer 2400BT today, and love how it looks, and sound quality is so much better than the stock radio. Here's mine:

I've been debating which radio to get for my car. I could spend a lot of $$$ to get one of the newer headunits out there, but this seems like a really good option
