Here's the rebate:

http://www.pennzoil.com/diy-rebate/

You have to purchase the oil by the end of May to qualify. I bought 10 quarts, so I'm expecting a $20 refund.

Then again, I've always been an anti-pennzoil guy. Always said I wouldn't use it in my lawn mower. But the more I read about their platinum synthetic, the more I'm starting to sway against my prior thoughts. Especially since I found out it's made by shell, same people who make Rotella and THAT is a great oil if you have a diesel.
great oil even if you dont (my buick and my motorcycle love it!)

i didn't know Penz Platinum was made by shell, link?

I only use royal purple in any and all of my vehicles, including my John Deere lawn tractor. I'm planning on changing my oil at around 2000 miles. I also plan on switching all of my fluids to RP as well. I was always a castrol guy, till I decided I'd try rp and maybe its a mental thing, but I won't go back. My thing is deciding if I need to use factory Subaru filter or Fram or wix. I like Fram for my trucks. I'd like to get the best filter I can buy, whatever that may be. If anyone knows anything better than what was mentioned, please let me know.

I'll never understand the logic of using high quality oils with every day run of the mill paper filters

Maybe "made by shell" was the wrong phrase but as of 2002 they are certainly owned by shell.

I do not run the extended OCI they allow, I still change 3-4k miles. I'm more interested in the oil qualities with RP. I think at that OCI the paper filter was fine. My race cars and vette I use the RP filter, but my trucks I didn't bother. I bought the 6 ok of roki's from the eBay link a few min ago. So I'll use those with RP oil for now.

I find your inclusion of Fram to be interesting, coming from someone who cares enough to pay for Royal Purple oil. It just seems like such a contradiction.

Most enthusiasts HATE Fram filters, with the possible exception of their synthetic media filter:

http://www.amazon.com/Fram-XG7317-Ultra-Spin-On-Filter/dp/B000C33MI2/ref=au_pf_ss_10?ie=UTF8&Make=Subaru%7C13&Model=Impreza%7C62&Year=2012%7C2012&carId=001&n=15684181&s=automotive

I've heard good things about Wix and Purolator filters. For now, I'm sticking with the black Subaru Roki filters.

Like I said, I change oil like clock work. I also mentioned I do not use them in my performance cars, as I drive them pretty hard. My work trucks are not worked hard or used to tow, they just drive from point A to B. I look at it (oil and filters) from two perspectives, what can the oil provide besides just lubrication, and can the filter keep the oil strained during that time. My trucks all run better and get better mpg with RP oil. It also has bonding properties to the metal the regular synthetics do not. I just chose to draw the line there. I felt the Fram or wix filters were adequate for 3000 miles in my trucks. I didn't do loads of research to come to any conclusion that Fram is some kind of miracle filter, so please do not twist my statements to reflect that. I simply stated that I used them in my trucks ( not exclusively). As a business, I have to be concerned with ROI, and without spending hours on it, or doing oil analyzation tests, I just focused on oil with one of those two filters. I only used RP oil and filters in the other cars. I just ordered the roki's for my impreza. And yes, I'll use RP in it as well. On the contrary I find it interesting some focus very heavily on the filter, as important as it is, and then less on the oil. I personally wouldn't use pennzoil of any flavor if I was handed a lifetime supply. I can have my attny type up info on mud that would make people think its gold, so I don't trust or buy based on what any manufacturer says on their site. I'm from the school of believing something when I see it, or see people whom I feel would know recommend it. I am comfortable with RP. I've never used purolator filters, but they sound better than wix or Fram.

I don't believe I twisted your statement in any way. I'm simply pointing out how I find it curious that someone would choose a boutique oil like Royal Purple, and then throw a generally despised filter like a Fram into the same vehicle.

Frankly, with an OCI as frequent as yours, I'm sure any 0W-20 oil and filter would do the job just fine.

As for needing evidence from a trustworthy source with regard to Pennzoil Platinum, just point your browser to the Bob Is The Oil Guy web site. You'll find plenty of people who are fanatical about oil who swear by Pennzoil Platinum.

good read on Amsoil OE vs PP. PP should be the better oil
http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums...2981638&page=1

although when my OE is gone (1 more change left on the shelf) I will be restocking with Amsoil Signature again as I really liked that oil, and will probably do a 10-12k interval

The penn platinum might be a great oil, I have never used it. I have used penn years ago in my first car. Then after a few years I had to have the valve covers removed and cleaned out because the build up was over the top. I'm sure it's changed since then, but I have already moved on. The cost of oil for a car that takes 5-5 1/2 qts is minimal when you compare $5 vs $9 a qt oil. So it costs an extra $20 for better oil. If I feel like it helps the engine wear, it's cheap money. It might be just a peace if mind, and not make sense to anyone else. Idk. I do know I have experienced better results from running it, so I will continue to. If I find or am convinced something else is far better, I'll be the first to switch. Hence why I asked about people's recommendation for filters. My old vette years ago was idling kinda rough for some reason. I changed the oil that day and slick 50 had actual oil ( it was not the additive, it was oil ) and I started using that. It immediately started idling better and ran much better. I don't think they sell the oil anymore, atleast I havnt seen anything around here but the additive lately.

Same thing I said earlier...just doesn't make sense to me. The argument of "the little extra cost for the amount of protection" doesn't make sense when you use a cheap basic filter. Why not have the same attitude and by the RP filter or any other synthetic media or since he's already using fram, use their ultra filter.

It's like buying a jockstrap and a cup, but then only wearing the strap. Yeah the little bit of extra cost is worth paying for the protection but on game day when you only wear the strap it's not gonna matter so much!

You right, I probably should have bought the better filter. I just didn't in my trucks. I did my cars. So give me 1/2 credit? Lol. I'm not arguing about mpg so don't slay me over it. My impreza will have roki and RP. If I'm ok to use RP filters in it I prefer, however there was a lot of talk about valve pressures et al. And I also just ordered 6 of them. If I were very smart, I would have bought subarus a long time ago. So keep that in mind as well.

Back in the old days of the 60's and 70's Quaker state and Pennzoil was made from Pennsylvania crude oil, very high wax base, would collect in the valve train area, timing chain area and literally coat the oil pickup like an umbrella. Now these were straight oils not synthetic. I worked in a gas station in HS that was also a 3 bay repair shop so I saw this crud first hand and being low guy knew our shops scrapers by their first names :-) Exxon was another one but they stood out by their red trademark color. Everybody used Frams, then in 85 I had two cans blow off in the driveway 40 seconds after I firedup my freshly oil changed 82 S10 sport two oil changes in a row, no more Frams after that, went to Purolator, NAPA gold and WIX, whoever I had a coupon for. With my jeeps it was Mobil-1 and K&N or Napa Gold. This Impreza is a new animal with that awful high bypass pressure valve. I have a Mobil-1 filter on the shelf but now I don't know if I should use it. I think I will try the Penzoil platinum though.

My grandfather owned a few Philips 66 stations, and my dad grew up working in them. Back then 50's and 60's Trop Artic oil was all they would use period. Dad told me about new fords and others with very few miles that would burn a quart of oil every couple thousand miles. After they ran Trop Artic through them a couple changes they would be fine. But then I think in the 70's it sold to another company and they changed it up and dad stopped using it. He said it was as bad as the others. I'm not sure it's even around anymore. I used to use castrol mainly and was pretty happy with it. Then I switched to the liquid gold. I've never has any oil filter troubles knock on wood. In fact, I've never had any big mechanical troubles in any of my cars period. Less a head gasket in my first MR2. Second gear came pretty quick, missed it once.

Anytime oil or mpg's are mentioned people lose their damn minds in this forum.

Is anyone using the Purolator PL14459? The bypass valve is 12-15 psi, vs Subaru's 23, vs Wix's 28. Does that even matter?

FIrst time using Pennzoil Patinum. Rave reviews, price compared to other brands (as well as rebate), along with my new found knowledge that Pennzoil is owned and made by Shell changed my old way of thinking that I'd never run Pennzoil in anything I owned, including my lawn mower.

Where did you get that sound insulation layer for your hood? Was it already installed before you bought the car, or did you add it later? If you added it later, did it make much of a difference in the car's noise level?
