Default Going import and not looking back... part 1

Hey all!

Serious advice DEFINITELY appreciated...

What's the best import (preferably a Subaru) that I can

1. Obtain DIRT cheap
2. Maintain for a long time
3. Modify fairly well

In other words,

If I had 5 grand or less worth of scratch, and for the time being, car appearance was not important to me, but having a well-run, nicely tuned machine was, what can I get? This car will be performing long-distance commute activities, so safety and comfort do also factor in.

I ***NEED***

1. Reliability (don't want to worry about the car breaking down)
2. Comfort and safety (Subarus seem to be very safe, if not comfortable too)
3. A stable engine and platform (for visual as well as mechanical mods)
4. Automatic tranny (yes, I said automatic tranny, I'll worry about tweaking it later)

All wheel drive is ideal as well

Thanks for your help folks!
God bless you,

p.s. should I start looking through junkyards now?

for around $5k, i'd recommend looking for an early 90's civic HB, or a late 80's supra if you can find one.
i'd go for the civic just because the aftermarket is relatively inexpensive.

good luck!

yep dem honda's are pretty cheap to maintain, modify and do last as long as they don't get stolen but if its AWD your looking for how about an impreza L with AWD. Its like an RS without the goodies. Can you say WRX engine transplant, easy suspension upgrade as it basically an RS so go to junkyard to mod shop for a real sleaper that starts out cheap. L's with fairly low mileage and AWD are definately in that area even for a 95,96 which is new with airbags too. A nice RS front bumper with fogs and boy what a nice car. I am a huge fan of older supra's and celica supra's but they aren't cheap but are super reliable. My 84 with just intake and exhaust is a daily driver for my work and has been since my pops bought it new. Only prob ever was rust. Never second guess if it will break down. NOt too speedy but gread car. RWD sucks in the snow though. go for the Impreza L if you want to mod and reliability.

I'd say go for a civic ~80s or ~90s Impreza L you can get all kinds of aftermarket for the 2 of them, and are relatively cheap and reliable.

yeah the awd turbo are real nice and can be made superfast cheaply but not the most reliable units on the planet. I know guys with these that are awesome and superfast with many parts avail but isn't a impreza L with WRX swap and RS parts a hair more reliable and better suited, except not as fast as a modded GSX?

For around 5K I would look for a SVX. You can pick a fairly nice one up for that price and they're all automatics. Just make sure if you get an L that it's AWD not FWD. They've been known to hit way over 200k miles.
