Default F1 2013 - Round 13: Singtel Singapore Grand Prix

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2409576

New turn 10 bishes! no more chicane!

Quote:

The Singapore Grand Prix will run on an updated circuit next weekend after track modifications were made at Turn 10.

The corner - known as the Singapore Sling - has previously been a three-part chicane due to a lack of run-off available on the street circuit. However, the corner has been modified to be a sweeping left-hander which will result in higher apex speeds and reduced lap time.

Having tested the track changes ahead of the grand prix in the Ferrari simulator, Fernando Alonso expects the modification to reduce the average lap time around Singapore by around one second.

Always an interesting race!!! One of the hottest tracks and hardest races of the year! I kinda liked the chicane as some people actually made passes there (Kobayashi) and also some other people def. get a good launch off of those curbs! But having it as a fast sweeping left now could def make it more interesting and maybe set-up for some overtaking under braking for turn 11.

Pretty stoked for this race

Not an official track, but I sure do enjoy watching them race here under the lights.

Once again, it's time for me to gaze into my crystal ball for a glimpse at this weekend's winner.

No surprise really.

If only we could get seb to DNF and have alonso and lewis both place high on the podium with kimi there as well, would the championship get a little closer, but still not close enough. If vettel takes a win here, 4-peat of the WDC will happen and more records made by the germans

If Vettel wins this race we pretty much have our champion for 2013

Its like spain and MotoGP right now. Almost every race, the whole podium are all from Spain

yeah, seeing the cars under the lights is great! the reflections show off the curves in a different way! otherwise, i'm not a hue fan of this track. but maybe it'll be different without the chicane. we'll see...

Unfortunately a lot people have already given up hope after Monza. Hopefully the next couple races will through some DNFs into the mix.

Hamilton leads Red Bulls after first practice

Lewis Hamilton set the pace in the opening practice session of the Singapore Grand Prix, backing up Mercedes' claims that a return to a high-downforce circuit would see it close the gap to Red Bull.

First practice took place against the backdrop of a setting sun and times improved as darkness fell over the circuit. Under the floodlights Hamilton was fastest with a time of 1:47.055, 0.365 quicker than his nearest competitor Mark Webber and 0.830s faster than championship leader Sebastian Vettel.

The times were over three seconds faster than the same session last year as the drivers were able to take more speed through the sweeping Turn 10, which replaces the tricky Singapore Sling chicane this year. But the order was more or less as predicted with Mercedes and Red Bull fighting over the top spot with Lotus and Ferrari behind.

To be precise, Kimi Raikkonen was fifth, 1.299s off Hamilton, while Romain Grosjean was just one thousandth of a second slower than his team-mate in sixth. Grosjean missed out on the early running as the team worked on an issue with his car, but by the end of the session he had made the most of the best conditions, completing 11 laps in the final 30 minutes FP1.

Fernando Alonso and Ferrari appear to have work to do after he could only manage the seventh fastest time, 1.307s off Hamilton. It's not unusual to see Alonso off the pace of the front runners in the first practice session but with team-mate Felipe Massa down in 12th place, 2.438s shy of Hamilton, Ferrari appears to be slower than it had hoped.

Sergio Perez, Jean-Eric Vergne and Esteban Gutierrez rounded off the top ten, indicating a close battle among the midfield teams to make the top ten this weekend.

Vettel and Red Bull dominate FP2

Red Bull dominated the second practice for the Singapore Grand Prix as Sebastian Vettel finished the session comfortably faster than the rest of the field.

Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton appeared to be in the mix in the first session, but once the sun had set and the spotlights took over, Vettel was in a class of his own. His best time on the super-soft tyres was 0.604s faster than team-mate Mark Webber, who was his closest rival.

Vettel's lap looked immaculate while Webber clobbered the wall on the exit of Turn 21 and Lewis Hamilton got stuck in traffic on his first attempt on super-soft tyres. Nevertheless, Vettel's advantage stood at over a second to the fastest Mercedes, which is a healthy margin even if Nico Rosberg was running heavier fuel.

Romain Grosjean was fifth fastest despite another session riddled with car issues. He started the session with a brake problem and finished it by juddering to halt in his pit box with a problem at the rear of his car. He only managed 18 laps in the intervening period but did set a respectable time of 1:45.411. Team principal Eric Boulllier said the problems are "a concern but should be fixed by tomorrow".

Fernando Alonso's fastest time will make grim reading at Ferrari as he finished the session 1.442s off the lead Red Bull. As usual his race pace looked closer to Vettel's, but if he starts three rows behind the Red Bull it is unlikely to count for much come Sunday's chequered flag.

Jenson Button was seventh fastest in his McLaren and a fraction of a second quicker than Kimi Raikkonen in the Lotus. He may have been 1.5s off Vettel, but compared to the other front-running cars McLaren looks as if it has made progress and he may have the opportunity to break into the top six in qualifying with a clean lap. Sergio Perez backed up the McLaren's improved pace with the 10th fastest time behind Adrian Sutil, who will be pleased to make the top 10 in a session after Force India's recent struggles.

Raikkonen didn't appear to get a clear lap in on the super-soft tyres but did set some promising times on longer runs that could see him in contention for a podium if he can qualify high enough up the grid.

It was another disappointing session for Felipe Massa, who could only manage the 15th fastest time in his Ferrari and was a whopping 2.621s off the pace of Vettel. Aside from the Marussias and Caterhams, which were over five seconds off the top, the only drivers behind Massa were Esteban Gutierrez in the Sauber and the two Williams, which appeared to be struggling more than ever.

Per their website, NBC Sports is apparently streaming it live on-line.

Here is an interesting analysis of the Friday practice times to predict the race pace of each car and driver.
