Tonight, SOA's Facebook posed the below question. Now, obviously McRae got a lot of comments but if this is a real lead in to an announcement it's either Pastrana (who left NASCAR) or Solberg (who is bouncing around different European series)...or someone else? Plus they fired Mirra so they have spare cash to spend on a new driver.

I know Petter is for sure set for European Rally Cross.

and I know VSC will run a 2015 STi with David Higgins & Craig Drew in Rally America.

With Higgins and Drew where they are, there is no "need" to bring back another former star. Surely not Pastrana.

Well not SOA, but 2000-2008 SWRT WRC driver and 2003 Champion.

Why does he need to have been involved with SOA? SOA is Subaru is FHI when they refer to Subaru Rally.

Um...nope. Just ambiguity by SOA...they did not intend to refer to SWRT which technically got money to operate by FHI but was operated by Prodrive who honestly probably signed drivers too not FHI. SOA SRTUSA literally had nothing to do with SWRT.

I think its a requirement at this point, considering that no one other than Higgins is running a full season. So even if SOA has to "manufacture" competition, it has to do something to make the championship seem relevant to justify the investment they've made.

Yeah, this seems to me to be a move to manufacture some competitive tension given the fact that it doesn't look like there will be any full-time external threat.

I understand Subaru likes Pastrana's marketing value, but I feel bad for all the single-mindedly committed professional and semi-professional rally drivers out there who were passed over for this opportunity.

This situation was SOOO predictable; it's at least the third time Pastrana has left a race team in a bind because he can't quit being a reckless douche on a motorcycle. He needs to grow up and decide if he wants to be a professsional race car driver or Evel Knievel.

Gary, I understand where you are coming from. I once felt as you do.

But the truth is that sponsorship is marketing. Winning doesn't necessarily equal the same exposure. You could give Chris Duplessis the keys to the car, and he might even give Higgins a run for his money, but even if he won, would it have even a fraction of the ROI that TP would give? TShirt sales alone probably pay a good portion back.
