Default lowering springs recommendations

looking to lower my car (2012 wrx wagon) with just springs, shocks and struts are still pretty much new!! don't want to slam it to the ground, i just want to fill in the space between tire and fender!! I have my car on 18's with a profile tire, so there is about 3 inches to play with. if anyone has any recommendation on what springs to get it would be highly appreciated!! thanks

There are lots of options and lots of variables to account for.

You have to really consider your driving style, road conditions, and other factors to determine what springs to go with. Rallysportdirect.com has a lot of options...


In my case, here in Colorado I often find myself on dirt roads with varying terrain and in front of speed bumps large enough to make stock Lexus and Mercedes sedans bottom out constantly.

From my research the Swift Spec-R springs are the best choice for me if I choose to go lower. They drop the car down to about 1" gap front and back without causing the saggy butt and they have good spring rates. You can definitely go lower with other springs as well. You just have to decide what will work best for you.

Lowering is typically not advisable. There are a number of factors that drive this, but the design of the suspension doesn't exactly accommodate drop without detriment to ride quality. You will bottom out much more, and the ride will be harsher because of this. If you like cringe-worthy driving, then by all means lower the car. You do have the option to go to a larger tire size to fill out the space too, but you will have a limit before you might hit the lower spring perch.

The big issue is bump travel and the lack of this when you lower the car. Lowering the car throws away all the suspension travel that would normally soak up bumps, and the ride gets sucky fast. The secondary issue is the damping design of the struts. They are very soft in compression meaning when you hit a bump there's little resistance. This also means that the bump travel will get used up very easily and the strut will simply bottom out when it runs out. This kind of damping profile favors taller ride heights where there's a lot of travel to be used to soak up the bumps. A lower setup will favor a damper setup with a lot stiffer compression damping, more like the STI's design.
