Default In car video with the AVO 500HP turbo..

I finially decide to make the switch to a bigger turbo. For almost a year I have been running the VF-22, and now that I have the RA tranny and engine, a bigger turbo was due.

I wanted to try a turbo that would fit the stock location first, just so see how much power I could extract before going custom. I called up the guys at AVO in Austrialia, and they set me up with the AVO 500HP turbo. It is a Garrett T04E hybrid with an AVO custom exhaust housing.

Pics of the turbo at: www.wrxworld.com

(VF-22 on left, AVO on right)

Anyways, I got the setup installed, and it works great. This really is a track turbo, as spool up is close to 5000rpm. With the 6 speed, shifts from 8krpm only drop to 6k, so that is not an issue on the track. The turbo flows 51lbs/min at 1.6kg/m, although I am only running at 22psi since I am still on the STI injectors. As soon as I get the 650s Al sent me installed, I'll jump to the 3 bar map sensor on the link and get this tuned to 24-25psi.

None the less, the turbo has lots of high end pull, excellent efficiency at the areas I run it, and feels awesome. 4th and 5th gear are downright scary sometimes. If your looking for some good power with the stock uppipe/downpipe, take a look at the AVO 400/450/500HP turbos.

I have posted some in car shots from this last weekend's track day. The car had incredible power, and I had no problem zipping around other Subarus on the track. Top speeds for the straights were up more than 5mph from previous setups.

Anyways, the videos always seem to be the most popular thing, so have a look!

Yea, the wrxworld server is on a dedicated T1, but as soon as I posted the above message the outbound traffic pegged to 1.5MB/s. Need T3.

Interesting turbo. I noticed you need a true twin
dump downpipe or a single opening downpipe
like the turboxs unit. May I ask how much you
paid for the turbo?

It is about $2800 AUS, which is somewhere around $1400 US. I think shipping is usually around $100 US for regular air freight.

Just watched the first video and I must say that its pretty sweet. Almost as impressive as seeing that beast in person. And it downloaded at about 20kB/s which isn't too bad.

Hey Jeff....this is Shauger. You should give me your footage and Tims footage so we can create a side by side version. See each drivers perspective of your spectacular pass (sorry Tim!!).

Great stuff...the guys here at work loved it!

Hey Jeff,

If you'd like a better place to host the videos you can try racingflix.com They seem to have a really good connection from which i constantly download at over 1mb/sec. Just a thought and thanks for info.

If I am not mistaken Jeff is running with a full STI driveline swap. I am positive that the sti doesn't have a cat in the up pipe, the down pipe I am not sure on.

A lot of boost without proper engine management and tuning will cause high egt.

As long as you can tune for the extra boost by adding more fuel and adjusting the ignition advance you can boost in safety

Sorry I didn't reply sooner, I assumed your question was a joke. About the only thing stock on my car is the paint. There is a complete mod list at:

Stock uppipe.. now that's funny..

[UPDATE] I moved the files to a new location with more bandwidth. Be sure to refresh the page before you download.

That last video looks like you're playing a video game but the difficulty level is way to low cause you just keep passing everybody. I'm jealous man. That is one incredibly car you got.

Awesome videos man..thanks for probably making everyone (including me) extremely jealous of your very sweet WRX. I loved all the videos especially the last one...it would be crazy to watch while under some drugs . That is a huge turbo you've got!

Thanks

As always, I love seeing your videos. Car absolutely rocks.

I have kind of an odd ball question, is the STi v7 engine OBD-II?

Well, it really is the ECU not the engine that determines that. If I were to use the stock US OBDII ecu, it would be, but the JDM STI ecu does not support the OBDII protocols, and would not pass emmissions here in Oregon. I will have to put the stock ecu back in to do emissions.

I got a ride in his car BEFORE he did the STi swap and it was scary fast then.

I think I need to schedule another business trip out there.

Nice car Jeff.
