Question 195/60/15 or 185/70/14 for winter tires?

So, I have decided to get winter tires this year. I have a '99 Impreza L Wagon. Stock tire size in 195/60/15. I'm looking at getting either 195/60/15 or 185/70/14.

Below is what I can think of for pros and cons for each...

14 inch
- skinnier tire (better in snow?)
- cheaper
- worse handling from taller sidewalls (?)

15 inch
- stock size
- longer tread life (?)
- more expensive

I drive mostly city streets with a speed limit of 30mph with some stretches of 55mph to work. I put on very few highway miles. For winter tire performance, I'm mostly concerned with being able to stop quickly or maneuver out of the other guy's way. I drive well-travelled roads, so with the salt, they're more likely to be slushy than icy.

Any thoughts?

i don't think you'll feel the worser handling that you're concerned about from the taller sidewall, or at least i hope you don't push your car that hard in bad weather for everyday driving. the narrower tire will be better in snow. if you have a lot of ice or other very slippery road conditions near you, might want to look at blizzaks specifically when comparing to other snow tires. don't think there's much difference between tread lives with that small of a radius, but if anything i would guess that the 14s would have better tread life.

If you don't plan on driving in deep snow, stick with the stock size. If you do plan on driving in deep snow, go with the narrower tire.

If you're going to be driving in a more urban area, I would stick with the stock size. I used to run 195/65/15s and they were great in those conditions.

Now, just make sure you get an appropriate tire.
